CARSON, Calif.-- The No. 15 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros held off the visiting SF State Gators (14-8, 12-6 CCAA) 72-68 this evening at the Torodome in Carson. Michael Cox paced the Toros with a game high 30 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field while going 12-for-13 from the line. Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College)with a career high 26 points.
"We competed at a high level this weekend,' said first-year head coach Paul Trevor. "We played our butts off all wekend and our getting closer,' added Trevor. 'We just need to learn how to execute at the end of a game."
The Toros jumped out to a 24-9 lead mid-way through the first half, but the Gators went on a 19-1 run in the next five minutes to take a 28-25 lead on a three free throws by Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline ). Cal State Dominguez Hills (19-3, 15-3 CCAA) finished the half outscoring their visitors 11-2 to take a 36-30 lead into the half.
Just like the beginning of the first half, the Toros jumped out to a double digit lead, 51-41, at the 14:17 mark of the second stana, but SF State would not quit.
Ralph Nevarez (West Covina, California, East Los Angeles College)lay-up with 10:05 to capped a 12-1 run by the Gators to cut the Toro lead to 53-52.
The Toros came right back an increased their lead to 60-52 on a Zareh Zargaryan lay-up with just 5:55 to go in regulation.
SF State fought back as back to back three's by Perdomo capped a 14-8 run by the Gators to cut the hosts' lead to 68-66 with 38 seconds to go.
The Toros went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 25 seconds to take the 72-68 CCAA victory.
The Toros shot 52% from the field while SF State shot 49% from the field while they out-rebounded the Gators 31-18. With the win, Cal State Dominguez Hills remains in second place, a game behind first place Humboldt State, and three games ahead of SF State.
Besides Hoskins' 26 points, Perdomo added 20 points for the Gators.

The Gators will return home for their final four games of the season beginning with this Friday, February 18th at 7:30pm with No. 13 Humboldt State. They are currently in third place in the conference, a game and a half ahead of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona who are tied for fourth place.
