Gators Win First CCAA Game of the Season

Kelly McDonald Had A Two-Run Double To Key the Gators' 4-3 Win over Sonoma

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.---  The SF State Gators won their first conference game of the season, a 4-3 victory over Sonoma State in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader.  Earlier this afternoon, the Gators lost 3-2 in 13 innings in conclusion of the suspended game from last night on a walk-off home run.  Then in the night cap of today's doubleheader, the Gators lost 9-0 in five innings.

SF State took a 1-0 lead in teh first inning of the suspended game on an Alyssa Esquibel (San Jose, California, Archbishop Mitty) single to left center that scored Kylie Herrada (Gilroy, California, Gilroy), who reached base on a walk.  Sonoma State(10-3, 7-1 CCAA) tied the game at 1-1 in its half of the sixth inning on a Skylnn Myer's two-out run scoring single that drove in Rochelle Vanyi with the tying run.

The game remained tied at one, until the Gator half of the ninth.  Summer Powell (Rocklin, California, Rocklin )led off with a single and Kelsey Murkami (Berkeley, California, Berkeley HS) came in to pinch run for her.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cara Spence (Colfax, California, Colfax) and scored on a single by Kylie Grabowski (Long Beach, California, Lakewood HS) to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.  The Seawolves tied the game in their half of the ninth on an one-out run scoring double by Jesse Talaugon that drove in Myers.  

That is where the game remained at until the Seawolf 13th inning, when Vanyi hit a walk-off home run on the first pitch to give the Seawolves the 3-2 victory.

Myers finished the game going 3-for-5 as did Talaugon while Vanyi scored twice for Sonoma State.  Julianne Martinez picked up the win, pitching 8.1 innings of relief while striking out 8 and walking two.  She gave up just four hits and one run in the 8 plus innings.

Marisa Ibarra (Hollister, California, San Benito ) (0-3) recorded the loss for the Gators.  Seven different Gators had one hit apiece.

In the Gators' 4-3 win, Sonoma State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a one-out run scoring single by Myers that drove in Kayla Ledford.

The Gators (3-10, 1-7 CCAA) had a three-run second with Kelly McDonald (Gilroy, California, Live Oak) two-run double that drove in Cara Spence (Colfax, California, Colfax) and Jenna Robertson (San Martin, California, Live Oak HS).  

The Seawolves scored a run in the third on Myers' double to left that drove in Vanyi.  SF State added an insurance run in the fifth on a double steal attempt by Lauren Maslak and Kendra Wood, which Wood scored the Gators' fourth run.

Sonoma State added a run in the fifth to cut the Gator lead to 4-3, but could not tie the game as Jordan Stanaland (2-0) held the Seawolves scoreless.  Stanaland picked up the win, pitching four innings of relief, giving up four hits and one run while walking two.  

Martinez (4-2) recorded the loss for Sonoma State, pitching 7 innings, giving up 6 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out six and walking five.  

Myers had two of the Seawolves' 8 hits.

Six different Gators had one hit apiece.

SF State lost the final game 9-0 in five innings as Samantha Liperd and Ciara Beceril combined on a one-hitter.  Liperd (5-1) pitched four innings, giving up one hit while striking out six.  

The Seawolves had a five-run first keyed by Rachel Gaber's two-run single.  

Kendra Wood (0-2) suffered the loss for SF State, who returns to the diamond this Friday for its home opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
