Gators Split on Day Two of Best of the West

Kylie Herrada Had Three Stolen Bases and Scored Twice For the Gators This Afternoon
TURLOCK, Calif.---    SF State went 1-1 on the final day of the 2011 Best of the West Invitaitonal at Pedretti Park in Turlock, Calif., this afternoon.  The Gators are now 2-3 after losing 5-1 to Cal State San Marcos and holding on to defeat Dominican 8-7.  Kendra Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) (1-0) picked up the win in game two, pitching 3.1 innings of relief, giving up three hits and one run while striking out four and walking one.

In their game against Cal State San Marcos this morning, the Gators' bats were held silenced by the Cougar pitching duo of Brenna Sandberg and Kirstin Jaeger as they held SF State to just four hits in seven innings.  Sandberg improved to 4-0 as she pitched 5 innings of two-hit ball while striking out 7 and giving up one run.  Jaeger pitched the final two scoreless innings in both team's fourth game at the Best of the West Invitational in Turlock.

Alicia Ingram lead off the game with a lead-off single and then stole second.  She scored the game's first run on a doubel by Alyssa Dronenburg.  Cal State San Marcos (5-1) added a run in the top of the third on a two-out single by Jalisa McCarval.  

SF State (2-3) cut the Cougar lead in half on Alyssa Esquibel (San Jose, California, Archbishop Mitty) solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.  

The Cougars added two more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh for the 5-1 win.

 Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent)fell to 1-2 as she recorded the loss for the Gators.  

In their final game of the invitational, SF State rallied and then held on for a 8-7 victory over Bay Area rival Dominican (0-5).  

The Penguins took a early 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Emily Hanson in the top of the first inning.  SF State came back in its half to tie the game at 2-2.  Kylie Herrada (Gilroy, California, Gilroy) opened up the Gator half of the first inning with a lead-off single. She then stole second and scored when Summer Powell (Rocklin, California, Rocklin )reached on an error.  Powell later scored on a single by Esquibel.

The Gators took the lead for good with a four-run third inning with Herrada scoring what proved to be the game-winning run.  She reached base on a walk and stole second and then scored on a single by Powell.  

Dominican did not give up as they came back with a four-run fourth with Crystal Albert's two-run double being the big hit of the inning as the Penguins cut the Gator lead to 7-6.

SF State added an insruance run in its half of fifth as Deana Querubin (San Jose, California, Milpitas ) drove in Kendra Wood after reaching base on an error by the Penguins.

In the Penguin half of the seventh, they left the tying and go-ahead runs on base with just one out as Wood retired the final two batters on a fly out and a strike out.

Herrada finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases while Querubin drove in two runs and Kelly Mast (Monterey, California, Notre Dame HS)also had two hits.

SF State will open up CCAA play this coming weekend for a four-game series in La Jolla, Calif., beginning with a 1pm starting doubleheader this Friday, February 11th with UC San Diego.
