SAN FRANCISCO-- Humboldt State hit four home runs in the Lumberjacks sweep of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader from the SF State Gators this afternoon at SFSU's Softball Field. With the sweep, the Lumberjacks improve to 21-19 overall and 11-14 in the CCAA while SF State 15-30 overall and 8-22 in the CCAA.
Kirsten Nouzovsky gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one as she drove in Sammi Gilbert on a one-out single to right field. Gilbert came in to pinch run for Chrissy Stalf after Stalf reached on an error by the Gators. She advanced to second when Felicia Viveiros walked.
Humboldt State doubled its lead to 2-0 on a lead-off home run by Courtney Hiatt (her fourth of the season) in the top of the second inning. The Lumberjacks added another run in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Geneva Perrine that drove in Alicia Reid, who reached on a two-out double.
The visitors broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning to increase their lead to 6-0.
Heather Jensen's two-out two-run single in the Gator seventh drove in the host's first two runs of the game.
Cara Spence and
Kelsey Murakami opened the Gator seventh with back-to-back singles. Then with two outs,
Kylie Herrada loaded the bases with an infield single. That is when Jensen drove in Spence and Murakami and put Herrada on second.
Lauren Maslak reached on an error to load the bases, but the Lumberjacks' Vaneza Hoover induced the final Gator batter to ground out.
Hoover (10-6) picked up the complete game victory, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out 9 and walking two. Perrine and Nouzovsky each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Humboldt State while Reed also had two hits.
Ashley Jackson (9-14) recorded the loss for the Gators. Six different Gator batters had one hit apiece.
In the night cap, the Lumberjacks took a 1-0 lead on a lead-off home run by Perrine (second of the season) in the top of the first inning. Viveiros hit her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to lead –off the second, to increase the visitors' lead to 2-0.
The Gators took their first lead of the day on a bases-clearing triple by Jensen, her first of the season. Spence opened the inning with a lead-off single and went to second on a one-out infield single by
Jordan Stanaland. Then with two outs, Herrada walked to load the bases and set the table for Jensen who delivered with a triple to right field to give SF State a 4-3 lead.
Humboldt State retook the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning. Stalf advanced to second on a wild pitch. She then was pinch ran for by Tonya Walker. Still with one out, Kirsten Nouzovsky hit her 8th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center. Hiatt then walked and Gilbert came in to pinch run for her. Still with one out, Sarah Fox walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Viveiros, who finished the game 2-for-4, then hit a single through the left side to score Gilbert. The Lumberjacks scored their fourth run of the inning on a passed ball to take a 6-3 lead.
The Lumberjacks added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Stalf.
Marissa Ibarra (3-9) recorded the loss for the Gators while Jessica George (6-9) picked up the win for the visitors and Hoover pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to record her second save of the season.
Jensen had three hits for the Gators and Spence added two.
The two teams will finish off this weekend's four-game series tomorrow morning at 11am for another conference doubleheader at SFSU's Softball Field. Prior to the game, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own seven in
