SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State senior pitcher
Kendra Wood pitched a complete game victory as the Gators salvaged a split of this afternoon's conference doubleheader with the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks in the home finale for SF State. Wood struck out four batters and gave up just five hits and one run in improving to 1-2 on the year in SF State's 6-1 win in game two. The Gators lost the opener 4-3.
In the night cap, the Gators took a 1-0 lead on a
Lea Cardenas two-out RBI double that drove in
Alyssa Esquibel in the bottom of the first inning. Esquibel reached on a two-out walk.
The Gators added three more runs in the fourth capped by a two-out two-run single by
Kendra Wood.
Rachael Kroneder walked with two outs and advanced to third on a single by
Kelly McDonald.
Heather Jensen then drove in Kroneder with a single to right center which McDonald advanced to third on. Jensen then advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on the single by Wood along with McDonald.
SF State (16-31, 9-23 CCAA) added two more runs in the fifth on
Cara Spence's two-run double to right center that drove in
Kelsey Wood and
Jenna Robertson.
Humboldt State scored its only run on a RBI single by Kirsten Nouzouvsky in the top of the sixth inning. Chrissy Stalf finished game two for the Lumberjacks, 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jessica George (6-11) recorded the loss for Humboldt State.
Esquibel finished the night cap going 2-for-3 while Cardenas also had two hits for the Gators.
Stalf hit her team leading 15th home run to give Humboldt State an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader. The Lumberjacks (24-23, 14-18 CCAA) doubled their score on a solo home run by Nouzovsky, her 11th, in the top of the third inning.
The Gators got on the board in the third inning on a RBI single by
Summer Powell that drove in
Kendra Wood. Wood walked with one out and advanced to second on a single by Esquibel. Cardenas then walked to load the bases. With two outs, Powell singled home Wood with the Gators' first run of the game.
The visitors added two insurance runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 4-1.
SF State did not go away as the Gators scored two runs in the seventh and left the tying run on first base. Cardenas,
Kelsey Wood, and Powell all singled to load the bases to lead off the Gator seventh. The next Gator batter grounded into a double play which
Kelsey Wood and Cardenas advanced to second and third. Kroneder hit a two-out two-run single to left field to drive in Wood and Powell. Vaneza Hoover (13-7) then induced the Gator batter to line out to end the game and preserve the 4-3 Lumberjack victory.
Hoover pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and three runs while walking 9 and striking out three. Nouzovsky had three of the Lumberjack nine hits.
Ashley Jackson (9-15) recorded the loss for the Gators while
Jordan Stanaland pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Powell had two of the Gators' six hits to lead the hitting attack for the home team.
SF State will return to the diamond this Wednesday, April 20 at 1pm in Brisbane, Calif., for a non-conference doubleheader with the Academy of Art Urban Knights at Mission Blue Field.
