LA JOLLA, Calif. – Playing its second nationally ranked opponent of the weekend, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team was unable to get its offense on track Sunday, falling to No. 15 UC San Diego (25-19, 25-8, 25-22) on the road in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at RIMAC Arena.
The Gators hit just .097 for the match, slipping to 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in league play, while the Tritons kept their record perfect at 6-0 and 2-0 in the CCAA.
Conversely, the Tritons were paced by Hillary Williamson, who recorded her third double-double of the year with 15 kills and 16 digs, while Katie Condon (10 kills), Janessa Werhane (18 digs) and Roxanne Brunsting (13 digs) reached double digits in their respective statistical categories.
The opening set was a see-saw affair featuring 10 ties and four lead changes, with the Gators nursing a 17-15 advantage on a
Megan Johnson kill and a
Jazmine Williams solo block. However, UCSD caught lightning in a bottle, fashioning a timely 10-2 surge to close out the frame. The Tritons took advantage of four SF State attack errors and an errant serve down the stretch, while a Williamson kill provided the clinching point.
UCSD carried that momentum into the second stanza, building a 10-1 lead it would not relinquish. The Tritons hit .360 during the frame on 15 kills in 34 attempts with three errors, while limiting the Gators to a -.077 attack percentage on just five kills.
SF State regrouped in the set number three as an Ostello kill provided the visitors a 10-7 cushion. However, the Gators were unable to build on their advantage as UCSD fought back to take the lead, 15-14, on consecutive kills by Lauren Demos. Hall answered with a put-away of her own to tie the score, but two Williamson kills sandwiched around a Demos service ace sparked a 9-5 run to put the host school in the driver's seat at 24-20. Two straight SF State blocks tightened the score, however an errant attack snuffed out the rally.
The Gators return to the court on Thursday, Sept. 15, when they play host to Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 5 p.m.
