SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State wrestling team came up with four victories, but it wasn't enough as visiting Cal Poly emerged with a 25-13 triumph on Friday in a non-conference dual meet at The Swamp.
With the loss, the Gators slip to 3-4 on the season, while the Mustangs, who entered the night ranked 18
th in the latest Division I poll, move to 4-2 overall.
The two teams split the first four matches as the brotherly combo of
Isaiah Jimenez and
Zach Jimenez posted wins in their respective weight classes to give SF State a slim 7-6 advantage on the team scoreboard.
Isaiah Jimenez, who received a No. 8 ranking at 165 in the individual Division II polls earlier in the week, scored a 16-6 decision over Paul Woodman, earning six takedowns and a 3-point near fall to help raise his record to 13-4 on the season.
Zach Jimenez, meanwhile, endured a tough 7-5 decision over Sean Dougherty at 184, withstanding a late reverse as a penalty point with three seconds remaining sealed the bout.
However Cal Poly quickly roared back with three straight convincing victories as Ryan Smith (197) and Atticus Disney (285) each won by major decision, while Michael Clemmensen recorded a third-period pin at 125 to give the visitors a commanding 20-7 lead they would not relinquish.
The Gators temporarily derailed the Mustangs' momentum when
Julian Perez pocketed an 11-7 decision over Jake Tanenbaum at 133, but Boris Novachkov, ranked as high as No. 2 in Division I, erased any remaining doubt with a resounding 16-0 triumph by technical fall at 141.
The Purple and Gold tacked on the final points of the evening when
Dylan Phillipy outlasted Kyle Chene by a 5-3 count, collecting a key third-period escape to improve to 13-7 on the year.
SF State, ranked 19
th in the latest Division II poll, returns to action on Friday, Jan. 20, when it plays host to Stanford in another non-conference match-up at The Swamp, starting at 7 p.m.
