Box Score CARSON, Calif.-- In a game that saw both team's combine to shoot 31% from the field including a meager 13% from beyond the arc, it was the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros holding on to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 60-55. The Gators'
Nefi Perdomo led the way with a game high 21 points. With his 21 points, Perdomo became a member of the Gators' 1,000-point club. He now has 1,008 in his career at SF State and is 24 away from moving into 10
th place on the Gators' all-time career scoring list.
“We played really hard with a lot of passion,” said SF State Head Coach
Paul Trevor. “We just ran out of gas at the end of the game after a long two weeks on the road.”
SF State (4-14, 2-10) finished its season long five-game road trip holding its opponents to just 33% from the field including just 9% from three-point range. The Gators also forced 17 turnovers by their opponents.
Besides Perdomo's 21-point performance,
James Albright chipped in 11 points for the Gators. Perdomo scored his 1,000
th point with 2:32 left in the first half on a made free throw. “This is a great accomplishment for Nefi (Perdomo),” added Trevor.
George McGrew paced the Toros (9-5, 8-4 CCAA) with 18 points and Myron Green had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cal State Dominguez Hills held the Gators to just 29% shooting from the field and held the advantage on the board, 50-40.
Daniel Trammel's three-pointer off an assist from Perdomo capped a 16-4 run by the Gators to open up the game for the visitors in the first seven minutes of the game. SF State twice increased its lead to 14 including, 23-9, with 8:56 left in the half on a three by
Chad Delaney.
The Toros closed out the final 9 minutes of the half outscoring their visitors 14-7 to cut the deficit to 30-23 going into the locker room.
Cal State Dominguez Hills continued its run in the beginning of the second half as the Toros cut the Gator lead to 32-30 on two made free throws by Cornell Jenkins at the 18:02 mark of the second half.
Four minutes later, SF State increased its lead back to double digits when
Tyler Brown's lay-up capped a 8-0 run by the visitors as they took a 40-30 lead.
The Gators held ten-point lead with 12:38 to go, but the hosts held their visitors scoreless in the next three minutes and once again cut the deficit to just two, 42-40.
James Albright's old-fashioned three-point play stopped the Toro run and increased SF State's lead to 45-40 with 9:12 left in regulation.
The Toros held the Gators scoreless in the next seven minutes and took a 51-45 lead on a made free throw by McGrew.
On the Gators' next possession, Albright was fouled and connected on one of two free throws to cut the Toro lead to 51-46 with 1:21 left on the clock.
McGrew then connected on two free throws to increase the host lead to 53-46 with 61 seconds left.
SF State would not go away as Perdomo's lay-up with 26 seconds left cut the Toro lead to 54-50. The hosts then connected on all four of their free throws in the next ten seconds to take their largest lead of the game, 58-50.
Albright's three gave the Gators a little light as it cut the lead to 58-53 and then the Toros drew a technical as they had too many players on the court. Perdomo hit both free throws to cut the lead to 58-55 with just nine seconds to go in regulation.
Matt Cain then was fouled and sank both free throws to seal the 60-55 win for the Toros, who finished the night 25-for-31 from the line while the Gators were 13-for-22.
The Gators will return home for a brief two-game home stand this Thursday, January 26 at 7:30pm, when they host the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino a the Swamp.
