Nefi Perdomo,
Max Fodor and
James Albright combined for 43 of the SF State Gators' 56 points in their 56-45 victory over the visiting UC San Diego Tritons this evening at the Swamp on SF State's campus. Perdomo had 19 points, which moved him into 10
th place on the Gators' all-time scoring list with 1,033 points.
“It feels good to get a 'W',” said SF State Head Coach
Paul Trevor. “We finally put together a complete game.” “Max (Fodor) is getting better with each and every game and practice and Nefi (Perdomo) did a nice job off the bench for us.”
Perdomo finished the evening 3-for-6 from the field while connecting on one three-pointer. He also was 12-for-16 from the line while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out four assists and recording two steals in 34 minutes off the bench.
Fodor recorded his first collegiate double-double as he scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
James Albright added 10 points for the Gators, who held UC San Diego to just 37% shooting from the field including 14% from three-point land.
James McCann led the Tritons (7-12, 3-11 CCAA) with 14 points while Justin Brue chipped in 12 points.
SF State took an 8-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game with Fodor scoring four of those eight points for the Gators.
UC San Diego finally scored at the 13:38 mark when Ryan Wheeler connected on a lay-up to make it 8-2 Gators. The Tritons cut the deficit to 15-11 in the next five minutes on a James McCann lay-up, but the Gators increased their lead to 28-15 (their largest of the half) with just 2:45 left in the half.
The visitors scored the final three minutes of the half to cut their deficit to 28-18 heading into the locker room.
The Tritons held the Gators scoreless in the first seven minutes of the second half as they cut the host's lead to 28-27. SF State finally scored at the 13:33 mark as Perdomo connected on one-of-two free throws to make it 29-27 Gators.
Casey James' lay-up capped an 11-3 run by the Gators as they took a 40-30 lead with 6:39 left in the game.
The closest UC San Diego would get was when Mike Meza connected on a three with 2:21 to cut the deficit to 46-40. The Gators would end the game outscoring their guests 10-5 to take the 56-45 victory.
SF State (5-15, 3-11 CCAA) forced 18 turnovers by the Tritons while having a 45-32 advantage on the boards.
The Gators will begin a four-game road trip this Friday, February 3 in Turlock, Calif., for a 7:30pm scheduled conference game with Cal State Stanislaus. “We are trying to focus in the final eight games on just us becoming basketball players and better defensively,” added Trevor.
