Box Score SAN FRANCISCO --- SF State's men's basketball used a total team effort in their 78-72 win over the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers (6-5, 4-3 CCAA) this evening at the Swamp. The Gators held the Pioneers to just 33% shooting from the field including just 29% shooting in the second half to key their second straight win.
Nefi Perdomo paced the Gators with 18 points while
Griffin Reilly recorded his second straight double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
“I am really proud of the way our guys played this evening,” said SF State Head Coach
Paul Trevor. “They played for each other tonight.” “We are getting better with each and every game, but it still is a long way to go.”
Chad Delaney's back to back three's top open up the game helped the Gator to start the game with a 12-0 run in the first four minutes.
Jamel Turner's jumper capped a 21-6 run by the Pioneers in the next ten minutes to give the visitors a 21-18 lead. The Pioneers continued to lead for the rest of the half; with Turner's jumper giving them their largest lead of the game, 32-24 at the end of the first half.
Robbie Herndon's lay-up gave the Gators the lead back as they started the second half outscoring their visitors 9-0 to take a 33-32 lead in the first five minutes of the new stanza.
The next six minutes saw six lead changes; and the Pioneers saw their last lead of the game, 46-45 with 9:49 left in regulation.
Nefi Perdomo hit two free throws with 9:33 to go giving the Gators a 47-46 lead. They would not relinquish the lead for remainder of the game.
David Love's lay-up with 7:23 to go capped a 7-0 run by the Gators to give the hosts a 53-46 lead.
SF State (4-9, 2-5 CCAA) increased to lead to 59-49 with just a little over five minutes left on
Griffin Reilly's lay-up.
Jason Smith's three cut the Gators lead to 62-59 with a little under three minute left in regulation, but Perdomo connected on a lay-up to give the Gators a five-point lead.
The hosts increased their lead back to double digits as they outscored Cal State East Bay 13-6 to take a 77-65 lead with just 28 seconds left and they held off a Pioneer rally for a 78-72 victory.
Jacari Whitfield and Roshun Wynne each had 18 points to lead the scoring for the Pioneers while Mark Samuels chipped in 13 points.
Besides Perdomo's 18 points and Reilly's 17 points, the Gators also received double figures in points from
Tyler Brown and
James Albright each with 10 points.
SF State won the battle on the glass 48 to 35 and went 32-for-48 from the charity stripe; while Cal State East Bay was 22-for-33 on free throws.
The Gators will begin a season long five-game road trip this Thursday, January 12 in Rohnert Park, as they take on the Sonoma State Seawolves at the Wolves' Den. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
