Gators Fall in 3 OT Marathon to Dominican

ROHNERT PARK—In a game that saw the score being tied 17 times, the lead changing 13 times, 69 fouls called, 101 free throws attempted and a combined 225 points scored, it was the Dominican University Penguins (2-0) defeating the SF State Gators 115-110 in three overtimes in the first game of the Ron Logsdon Classic on the campus of Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif.
 
SF State (0-1) had four players score in double figures led by Decensae White and William Overton, Jr. who each had 24 points.  Sophomore guard Robbie Herndon had a career high 21 points off the bench for the Gators while Calvin Otiono chipped in 19 points. 
 
The Gators built a 17-10 lead in the first six minutes of the game and increased that lead to 23-14 on two made free throws by Overton. 
 
Dominican went on a 13-2 run in the next five minutes to take its first lead of the game, 27-25 on two made free throws by Jammall Clark. 
 
SF State retook the lead twice in the final minutes of the first half including 37-36 with 3:28 to go on Winston Demmin's two made free throws.  The Penguins ended the half on an 11-2 run to take a 47-39 lead in the locker room at the half.
 
The Gators came out strong in the second half as they outscored their opponents 19-11 in the first eight minutes of the new stanza to tie the game at 58-58.  They took a 62-20 lead with 10 minutes on the clock on a Herndon lay-up
 
Dominican though came right back as they outscored the Gators 13-5 in the next three minutes to take a 71-66 lead on a Connor Haysbert jumper. 
 
SF State would not go away as they once again tied the game at 78 all with 2:32 to go on two made free throws by Overton.
 
It did not look good though made two free throws with less than a minute to go to increase the Penguin lead to 82-78. 
 
The Gators still had some fight in them as White's made jumper cut their deficit to 82-80 with 29 ticks left on the clock.  SF State fouled Myles Carrillo on the next Penguin possession and connected on one of two free throws. 
 
Otiono then cut the Penguin lead to 83-82 on the Gators' next possession and then once again SF State fouled a Dominican player this time it was Devon Golston.  He connected on both of his attempts to give the Penguins an 85-82 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation. 
 
Things looked dimmed for the Gators, but Herndon rebounded his old missed shot and connected on a three to tie the game at 85-85 as the buzzer sounded to send the game into the first overtime.
 
In the first overtime, there were three lead changes and two ties.  The Gators took a 94-91 lead on two more made free throws by Overton with 2:08 left in the first overtime, but could seal the victory.  Ricky Wofford made one of his two free throws with 53 seconds left to cut the Gator lead to 94-92.  SF State then missed its chance to clinch the win as the Gators missed a shot and Wofford rebounded the ball.  Then with five seconds left, Clark sent the game into a second overtime period as he made his jumper.

Now in the second overtime, SF State took a 100-96 lead as the Gators hit back to back three-pointers by White and Overton, Jr., in the first three minutes of the new five minute session. 
 
Carrillo's three cut the Gator lead to 100-99, but Overton, Jr., once again made two free throws to increase SF State's lead to 102-99. 
 
Dominican turned the ball over on its next possession and the Gators could not capitalize as they missed a three and the Penguins' Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten rebounded the missed shot and was fouled.  He connected on both free throw attempts to cut the deficit to 102-101 with 31 seconds left in the second overtime. 
 
The Gators' White was fouled and increased the Gator lead to 104-101 as he connected on both free throws.  Then Clark once again saved the day for the Penguins as he drained a three as the buzzer sounded to send the game into the third overtime.
 
In the third overtime, Schwartz-Edmisten hit a three to give Dominican a 109-106 lead with 3:48 to go a lead they would not relinquish.  They increased its lead to 112-106 and held on for the 115-110 non-conference win.
 
Clark finished the night with a game high 25 points to lead the way for the Penguins.  Haysbert finished with 20 points off the bench for Dominican. 
 
SF State did force Dominican to turn the ball over 20 times while recording 13 steals (three each by White, Otiono and Demmin).  The Penguins controlled the battle on the glass, 52-33 led by Haysbert's 12 rebounds. 
 
The Gators will return to the court tomorrow evening at 5:30pm as they take on the Minnesota State Mavericks in the second round of the Ron Logsdon Classic in Rohnert Park, Calif.  The Mavericks defeated the tournament host, Sonoma State, 75-68 in the second game of the evening.  Dominican will face Sonoma State in the second game tomorrow evening.
