Box Score CHICO, Calif — The SF State Gators rallied from a 8-point half-time deficit to defeat the Mountain Lions of UC-Colorado Springs 69-66 this evening in their second game of the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational in Chico, Calif.
James Albright paced the Gators with 21 points while
Robbie Herndon added 19 points. SF State (2-2) shot 57% from the field including 67% from three-point land.
“It was a great weekend for us,” said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. “We did not play well this evening, but we did what we needed to get it done.”
UC-Colorado Spring (0-4) controlled the first half as they outscored the Gators 19-13 in the first six minutes of the new game.
In the next four minutes of the game, the Gators went on a 9-2 run capped by a
James Albright jumper to tie the game at 22-22.
Then the Mountain Lions outscored the Gators 14-7 to take a 36-29 lead on a three by Darious Pardner.
On the Gators' next possession,
Robbie Herndon hit a jumper to cut the Gator deficit to 36-31. Alex Koehler's three with 1:40 left in the half gave the Mountain Lions a 39-31 lead going into the locker room.
Herndon's three in the Gators' first possession cut the UC-Colorado Springs' lead to 39-34. The Mountain Lions then scored seven of the games' next 12 points to take a 46-39 lead.
The Gators took their first lead of the second half on a jumper by
Decensae White with 10:44 to go in the game, 50-49. They increased their lead to 58-55 on a jumper by
Calvin Otiono with just a little less than five minutes left in regulation.
Derrick White's two made free throws tied the game at 60-60 with 3:18 on the clock, but the Gators outscored UC-Colorado Springs 9-6 in the final 3:18 including going five-for-six from the charity stripe to seal the 69-66 win.
“James (Albright) and Robbie (Herndon) each stepped up this weekend,” added Trevor. “We have our league opener this Friday at home; we still to get better this week as we prepare for Cal State East Bay and Cal St. Monterey Bay.”
SF State will return to the court this weekend when the Gators hosts their home and conferenced opener this Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30pm against Cal State East Bay.
