SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State women's volleyball team faces a tough assignment on the road this weekend, Nov. 9-10, when it squares off against conference contenders UC San Diego and No. 25 Cal State San Bernardino on successive nights. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
The Gators (18-7, 13-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association) are currently tied for third place in the league standings with Sonoma State, a half-game behind UCSD and 2.5 games in back of CSUSB.
SF State is coming off a 2-1 showing last week, winning in four sets at Sonoma State before splitting its final two home matches of the year vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-0) and Cal State L.A. (0-3).
The Gators landed in the No. 6 position in the first of three NCAA regional polls announced Wednesday, Oct. 31. BYU-Hawaii tops the initial rankings, followed by Western Washington, Grand Canyon, CSUSB, UCSD, SF State, Central Washington, Western Oregon, Sonoma State and Chico State. The NCAA will release two additional regular-season regional polls (Nov. 7 and 14), with the final rankings to be announced on Nov. 18. The three regular-season champions from the CCAA, Pacific West Conference and Great Northwest Athletic Conference plus five at-large teams will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
A total of six Gators are among the conference leaders in the 10th CCAA statistical report of the 2012 season, including Iris Tolenada, who owns the top spot in assists (10.70/set) and ranks second in aces (0.39/set, 37 total), while Jessica Nicerio also occupies the No. 2 spot in digs (4.67/set). Elsewhere, Kelly Ostello climbed to fourth in kills (3.43/set), while Meagan Wright finds herself in the fourth position as well with a .318 hitting percentage (302-87-676) and ranks sixth in kills (3.25/set) and 11th in aces (0.30/set, 28 total). In addition, Jaclyn Clark (4th - 0.35 aces/set, 30 total) and Megan Johnson (7th - 0.32 aces/set, 30 total) have landed in the top 10, too.
