SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco State starting pitcher Marisa Ibarra struck out a career-high nine batters on Friday, but it wasn't enough as the visiting UC San Diego softball team scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to escape with a 3-0 victory in game one of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader.

The 10th-ranked Tritons, who entered this season as reigning NCAA Division II champs, later completed the sweep with a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap, raising their record to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while the Gators slip to 4-11 on the year and 2-8 in the CCAA.

The opener featured a classic pitcher's duel as Ibarra yielded just three hits in the first seven innings before UCSD mounted its winning charge.  With one out in the eighth, the Tritons' Emily McQuaid and Kris Lesovsky reached on consecutive singles, while Kirsten Willmon stepped up to the plate to sacrifice the two runners over.  However, an errant SF State throw on the bunt enabled McQuaid to race home, while Lesovsky moved to third and promptly scored on Mya Romero's sacrifice fly. In the interim, Willmon stole second and touched the plate shortly thereafter on Nicole Spangler's RBI single.

The Gators put two runners aboard in the bottom of the frame when Kylie Grabowski smacked a one-out double, while Cara Spence was hit by a pitch.  However, the threat was quickly subdued by UCSD starter Camille Gaito (7-2), who induced a pair of ground-outs to cement the win for the visitors. Gaito, who garnered the most outstanding player accolades during the 2011 DII finals, fanned five hitters while surrendering just five hits and one walk in all eight innings.  Conversely, Ibarra (2-3) was the hard-luck loser after tossing her third complete game of the year.

In game two, the Tritons grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on another SF State miscue during a bunt attempt, while Charly Swanberg added a sacrifice fly.  The Gators quickly answered with three markers of the own as Ashley Huff's bunt single plated Jensen, while Kelsey Murakami knocked in Kylie Herrada with a sac fly to left.  Moments later, Summer Powell smacked her first double of the season to bring home Huff, which put the host school up 3-2.

The lead proved to be short-lived, however, as UCSD vaulted in front to stay at 5-3 in the top of the second on Willmon's two run single.

The Tritons gave themselves some additional breathing room in the fifth as pinch-runner Annie Heskett scored on Swanberg's double to deep center field, while pinch-hitter Monique Portugal added an RBI single in the seventh to account for the final outcome.

UCSD starter Michelle Escamilla (3-1) survived a shaky first inning to earn the victory, giving up all three runs on fours and two walks.  Meanwhile, SF State's Jordan Stanaland (1-3) took the loss, allowing all five runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks, before suffering an undisclosed injury in the top of the second.  Ali Garcia took to the circle and gave up one run on four hits and a walk in five innings of work.

The two teams will close out their four-game set on Saturday with another doubleheader at SFSU Softball Field, starting at 11 a.m.
