No. 16 Toros Sink Gators Twice in Friday Twin-Bill

Kelsey Murakami went 2-for-4, including her second career home run in the nightcap vs. No. 16 CSUDH on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARSON, Calif. – The visiting San Francisco State softball team was unable to contain the hot bat of Christina Chavez as16th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills captured both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Friday at Toro Diamond.  The Toros pulled away for a 7-1 victory in game one before claiming a 9-6 decision in the nightcap.

Chavez went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with seven RBI and two runs scored to help complete the sweep for the Toros (20-3, 13-1 CCAA), who have won 19 of their last 20 contests to remain alone atop the league standings.  The Gators, meanwhile, received a three-run homer from Heather Jensen in game two, but it was not enough as the Purple Gold saw their record slip to 5-14 on the year and 3-11 in conference play.

CSUDH grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the opener as Chavez doubled home Khryssi Steele in the bottom of the first before Jessica Hall drew a bases-loaded walk in the second.  Chavez then added a two-run single in the fourth, plating Steele and Catherine Brown to give Toro starting pitcher Lauren Harper a 4-0 cushion.

SF State tallied its lone score in the fifth when Kylie Grabowski led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Kelsey Murakami, who advanced on a sacrifice and touched home on a wild pitch shortly thereafter.

However, the Toros quickly widened the gap in the bottom of the frame as Veronica Vazquez tripled home three runners to account for the final score.

Harper (9-2) went the distance, allowing just one hit and two walks to go along with nine strikeouts, while Gator starter Marisa Ibarra (3-4) absorbed the loss after surrendering all seven runs on seven hits and five walks in six innings.

In the nightcap, CSUDH scored four runs on four hits in the first inning, capitalizing on two SF State throwing errors and an illegal pitch, before Jessica Hall added an RBI double in the second to provide the host school a 5-0 advantage.

The Gators finally dented the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Murakami belted her second homer of the season – a solo shot down the left field line. However, the Toros broke the game open with four additional markers in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Chavez's three-run blast over the fence in left.

Trailing 9-1, the Gators narrowed the gap on Ashley Huff's run-scoring double in the fifth, while Jensen followed with her second homer of the year in the seventh, plating Sarah Catania and Kelly Mast, who reached on a walk and infield single, respectively.  Moments later, Summer Powell doubled in Courtney Gravel, who previously singled, which trimmed the deficit to 9-6.  However, Harper took over for CSUDH hurler Stephanie Jimenez at this juncture and promptly induced a fly-out and a ground-out to nail down her first save of the year.

Despite a shaky seventh, Jimenez (10-1), who yielded to Karen Peterson with two outs in the fifth before re-entering in the sixth, picked up the victory after surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 2/3 combined innings, while SF State starter Torrey Rook (0-2) allowed eight runs on nine hits before giving way to Ali Garcia in the fourth.

CSUDH finished with 13 hits in the contest, including two apiece by Chavez (4 RBI), Steele, Hall and Jimenez, while Murakami contributed two hits of her own to lead the Gators.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend set with another twin-bill at Toro Diamond on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
