BELMONT, Calif. – After playing three consecutive five-set matches at the Route 92 Showdown, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team took care of business in its tournament finale Saturday night with a 3-0 triumph (25-11, 25-13, 25-23) over co-host Notre Dame de Namur at Walter Gleason Gym.

With the sweep, the Gators (5-2) salvaged their second straight split after dropping a tough 3-2 decision (27-29, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14) to Cal Baptist earlier in the afternoon.

Kelly Ostello launched 36 kills on the day, including a career-high 23 against CBU, while Megan Johnson finished with a combined 24 put-aways of her own to go along with 30 digs.

The Gators never trailed against the Argonauts en route to their fourth sweep of the season as the match featured just eight ties.

Kelly Ostello hit .478 on the evening, knocking down 13 kills on 23 attempts with just two errors, while Megan Johnson (.353) totaled nine put-aways to lead the SF State attack.  In addition, Iris Tolenada (23 assists) and Katie Mullen (13 assists) split time at setter, while Jessica Nicerio paced the defense with 24 digs.

As a team, the Gators outhit NDNU .333-.097, maintaining a sizeable 67-42 advantage in kills and a 58-43 spread in digs.

SF State nursed a slim 4-3 lead in the first set until an Ostello kill followed by four straight Argonaut attack errors broke the score wide open.  The Purple and Gold methodically stretched the margin to double-digits, with Jaclyn Clark blasting a kill to provide the clinching point.

The Gators turned on the afterburners in the second stanza, hitting at a stellar .536 clip on 17 kills in 28 swings with just two miscues. With the score deadlocked at 2-2, Ostello and Johnson alternated kills on the next four serves, and SF State never looked back.

The Purple and Gold threatened to runaway with the third set as well after a Johnson service ace gave the visitors a 9-2 cushion.  However, three kills by Brooke DeMiguel and two by Jennifer Jasper keyed a 13-6 NDNU run that knotted the score at 15-15.  Three ties later, the Gators finally went ahead to stay at 22-20 following an Argo attack error and a Meagan Wright ace. SF State committed two service errors down the stretch, allowing the host school to pull within 24-23, but NDNU promptly returned the favor to end the match.

The Argos were led by DeMiguel's nine kills, while Jasper and Kawai Robins-Hardy added six apiece in the loss.

Cal Baptist 3, SF State 2
Despite holding a 67-52 advantage in kills and a 106-92 edge in digs, the Gators were unable to control the Lancers at the net in a heartbreaking five-set defeat. CBU maintained a whopping 20.0-9.0 spread in blocks and committed nine fewer attack errors (36-27) to eke out the win.
Megan Johnson

SF State had four players record double-doubles for the match, including Kelly Ostello who surpassed a career-high with 23 kills to go along with 11 digs, while Megan Johnson posted 15 non-returnables and a collegiate-best 25 digs.  In addition, Meagan Wright (14 kills, 19 digs) and Iris Tolenada (52 assists, 10 digs) doubled up on the stat sheet, while Jaclyn Clark and Melissa Horton finished with 17 and 12 digs, respectively.

Conversely, the Lancers were paced by Ingrid Carmona's 25-kill, 21-dig performance, while Malika O'Brien (11 total blocks) and Kim McCalmont (18 digs) added 12 kills apiece. Elsewhere, Taylor Parker totaled 29 assists and 10 digs, while Megan Glennie added 20 scoops of her own.

The opening frame featured 14 ties and eight lead changes, with neither side enjoying a lead of more than three points.  Trailing 22-20, Wright knocked down two kills and combined on a block with Ostello to key a sudden 4-1 spurt that put the Gators in front 24-23.  The two teams each squandered a pair of clinching opportunities over the next seven serves until SF State finally prevailed after a Katie Judd kill and a block by Wright and Johnson.

Stung, the Lancers opened up a 10-2 advantage in the second stanza before the Gators reeled off a timely 16-7 run to take an 18-17 lead.  During that span, Judd launched four put-aways, Johnson recorded two of her own, while Kelsie Brennan served up two aces.

Unfortunately, the Purple and Gold was unable to sustain the momentum as CBU quickly regained the upper hand for good on two McCalmont non-returnables and a pair of blocks by Kaitlyn Edwards and Kattie Givens.  SF State mounted one last charge, eventually knotting the score at 23-23 on kills by Brennan and Ostello.  On the ensuing two serves, however, the Lancers benefited from a Gator attack error and received a block by Carmona and O'Brien to escape with the set.

The Gators regrouped in the third set, posting their best hitting percentage of the match (.395) on 18 kills in 38 swings with just three errors.  After building a seemingly comfortable 17-9 cushion, SF State experienced some anxious moments as CBU fashioned a 10-4 run to pull within 21-19.  The Purple and Gold stood its ground, however, as Brennan knocked down a kill moments later for the clinching point.

The Gators took a 6-4 lead in the fourth frame on a pair of Ostello kills, but soon committed five attack errors during a 10-4 surge that vaulted the Lancers in front for good at 14-10.  CBU nudged the margin to five on two occasions, including a 23-18 spread following an errant SF State serve.  Two Wright put-aways and another pair by Ostello keyed a 5-1 spurt that trimmed the deficit to one at 24-23.  However, Carmona snuffed out the Gator rally with a kill to tie the match at two sets apiece.

The fifth and final set was no less dramatic as the Lancers raced to a 7-3 lead on a Givens kill and an SF State attack error.  However, the Gators quickly picked themselves off the mat with a 9-3 run, punctuated by a Tolenada and Brennan block, to go in front, 12-10. Following a timeout, CBU promptly regained the momentum as Carmona collected three kills down the stretch, while Givens and McCalmont fittingly ended the 2 hour-and-32 minute marathon with a block.

SF State returns to the court next weekend, Sept. 14-15, when it welcomes Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay on successive nights to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play. First serve for both matches is 7 p.m. at “The Swamp.”
