The No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (13-1, 9-1 CCAA) held the visiting SF State Gators to just 28% shooting from the field in their 66-46 CCAA victory at Kellogg Gymnasium this evening. Bryce Brady paced the Broncos with a game high 17 points. SF State (8-6, 6-4 CCAA) was led by William Overton, Jr.'s 12 points while James Albright added 10 points off the bench.
“Cal Poly Pomona is a very good basketball team,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor. “We did not shoot well this evening and did not match well with them this evening.”
The Broncos, who hold a one-game lead on first place, took a 15-2 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Terrence Drisdom's three gave Cal Poly Pomona its largest lead of the half, 20-5, with 9:09 left in the first half.
SF State chipped away at that lead and back to back baskets by Robbie Herndon (a three and a lay-up) cut the deficit to 23-16 with a little under six minutes left in the first half.
Cal Poly Pomona finished the half outscoring the Gators 8-2 to take a 31-18 lead into the locker room.
The Broncos held the Gators scoreless in the first five minutes of the second half until Herndon made two free throws to give the visitors their first two points of the half as Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead to 39-20.
Mohamed Fell's tip-in with 11:51 on the clock, gave the hosts their largest lead of the game, 49-20 as they cruised to a 66-46 victory.
SF State is still in a three-way tie for first place with Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills heading into the final weekend of the first half of the conference season next week. The Gators will host UC San Diego this coming Friday, January 25 and Cal State San Bernardino a week from this evening, January 26 at The Swamp.
“We showed some holes this evening,” added Trevor. “We lost our defensive identity and we need to get back to the fundamentals this week heading into next weekend.”
Tip-off for both games next weekend is set for 7:30 pm PST.
