SAN FRANCISCO – Four players scored in double digits for the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (12-3, 10-2 CCAA) to key their 77-68 road conference win over the SF State Gators. Brian Goins led the way for the visitors with a game high 23 points, going 8-for-17 from the field including 5-for-9 from three-point land.
James Albright had 18 points off the bench for the Gators, who are now 9-7 overall and 7-5 in the CCAA.
"Our guys gave a good effort this evening," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "We just did not do the little things to get the job done."
Besides Goins' 23 points, Lacy Haddock and Johnny Bell each added 12 points and Kwame Alexander had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Albright went 6-for-8 from the field which included him connecting on three of his five attempts from beyond the arc.
Decensae White added 14 points while
Winston Demmin chipped in 11 points for the hosts, who are now in a three-way tie for third place in the CCAA with Cal State L.A. and Chico State.
The Coyotes scored the first five points of the game, but the Gators came right back to take 12-11 lead capped by an Albright jumper. A three by Goins gave the lead back to the visitors and then Albright connected on an old-fashioned three-point play to give SF State a 15-14 lead (the last time they held the lead in the game.).
CSU San Bernardino finished the half outscoring the Gators 22-11 to take a 36-26 lead into the locker room at the half.
SF State twice cut the Coyote lead to just five in the first three minutes of the second half including on a three by
Calvin Otiono to cut the visitor lead to 41-36.
The Coyotes responded and went on a 10-5 run to take a 51-41 lead on a three by Goins with 12 minutes to go in the game.
The Gators would not go away as they cut the deficit to 53-47 with 9:21 left on two made free throws by Demmin. Cal State San Bernardino once again increased its lead back to 10 on a lay-up by Joshua Gouch with 6:21 to go to give the Coyotes a 59-49 lead.
SF State still would not go away as they cut the deficit to just six on a dunk by White with just 52 ticks on the clock.
Cal State San Bernardino though finished the game going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe including Lacy Haddock going four-for-four to give the Coyotes the 77-68 victory.
The Gators held the Coyotes to just 42% shooting from the field, but the visitors turned the ball over just 8 times and forced 13 turnovers by SF State.
SF State will be back on the road this Friday, February 1, as the Gators travel to Seaside, Calif., for a rematch with the Cal St. Monterey Bay Otters. The Gators defeated the Otters 60-55 on December 1 in San Francisco.
"We are in a good situation being in third place heading into the second half of the season," added Trevor. "We know we still need to get better."
