SF State Drops Three Matches to Division One Opponents at the Mustang Duals

Isaiah Hurtado Went 2-1 at the Mustang Duals to Improve to 6-4 on the Year
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.— The SF State Gators participated in the Mustang Duals this afternoon at Mott Gymnasium on the campus of Cal Poly in San Louis Obispo, Calif., and went 0-3 against three Division I opponents.  The Gators lost 22-17 to the University of Wyoming, 28-8 to Columbia University and 27-15 to Cal Poly.  Five Gators had winning records in Conrad Snell (2-0), Isaiah Hurtado (2-1), Naveed Bagheri (2-1), Isaiah Jimenez (2-1) and Richard Segovia (2-1).
 
WYOMING vs. SF STATE
SF State (1-4) started off its day losing a close 22-17 dual to the University of Wyoming Cowboys (6-2).  Tyler Cox started off the dual giving the Cowboys a 3-0 lead by defeating the Gators' Marc Collier by a 6-0 decision.  The Gators took an 11-3 lead after their bouts at 133, 141 and 149. 
 
Isaiah Hurtado won his match by a 10-2 major decision over Wyoming's Jake Eitzen at 133.  Then the Gators recorded their second straight win by major decision as Naveed Bagheri won by a 15-5 major decision over McCade Ford at 141.  Snell won by a 3-2 decision at 149 over Brandon Richardson.
 
12th ranked Any McCulley snapped the Gators' rally with a win by fall at the 2:37 over SF State's Vicente Aboytes at 157.  SF State took a 14-9 lead when Isaiah Jimenez won by a 4-3 decision over Dakota Friesth. 
 
Wyoming took a 17-14 lead as the Cowboys won the next matches by major decisions at 174 and 184.  At 174, it was LJ Helbig winning by an 11-2 score over AJ Simon and then at 184 Shane Woods won by a 16-3 decision over SF State's Calvin Nicholls
 
Wyoming clinched the dual with a 20-3 technical fall decision by Alfonso Hernandez over the Gators' Thomas Martin at 197.  The 11th ranked Hernandez gave the Cowboys a 22-14 lead.  SF State's Richard Segovia won the final match in the dual by a 7-5 decision over Wyoming's Leland Pfeifer to make the final 22-17 Wyoming.
 
COLUMBIA vs. SF STATE
This dual started off as the Lions won the first match by a 7-2 decision at 125 as the Gators' Jairo Rodriguez (2-2) fell to Robert Dyar.  SF State took the next two matches to take a 8-3 lead.  Hurtado once again won by a 11-2 major decision, this time over Columbia's Joe Monta.  Bagheri, who is ranked fourth in the nation in Division II, also won by a major decision.  The two-time All-American defeated the Lions' Matt Bystol by a 12-1 decision. 
 
The Lions won the next match by a 5-2 decision at 149 to cut the Gator margin to just one (8-7).  Alec Mooradian defeated the Gators' Daniel Flores (4-5).  Columbia took the lead for good as Tyler Sheradon won by a 6-2 score over SF State's Aboytes (9-8) at 157.  They won the final five matches of the dual to take the 28-8 victory. 
 
CAL POLY vs. SF STATE
In their final dual of the day, the Gators started winning by forfeit at 285 as Richard Segovia (2-2) picked up the win.  Cal Poly won the next bouts by decisions.  At 125, Britain Longmire won by a 9-3 decision over SF State's Marc Collier (3-8) and then at 133, the Mustangs tied the score at 6-6 as Devon Lotito won by a 15-12 decision over the Gators' Isaiah Hurtado who fell to 6-4.
 
Brandon Raha (Cal Poly) gave the Mustangs a 12-6 lead as he won by fall just 41 seconds into the match over SF State's Naveed Bagheri (9-4) at 141.  Conrad Snell tied the match for the Gators at 12-12 as he won by fall 2:29 into his bout at 149 over the Mustangs' Damien Arrendondo to improve to 8-3.
 
At 157, in one of the most exciting match of the dual. It was the Mustangs' Kyle Chene winning by a 3-2 decision over SF State's Vicente Aboytes to give the hosts a 15-12 lead.  Chene scored the victory gaining a point by riding time in the final period.  SF State once again tied the match, 15-15, as Isaiah Jimenez (who is 8th in the nation) won by a 5-3 decision over Connor King to improve to 7-3.
 
Cal Poly won the final three matches of the dual, by a 7-1 decision at 174, by a fall (4:25) at 185 and by 7-1 at 197 to take the 27-15 decision.  AJ Simon lost by the 7-1 decision at 174 to the Mustangs' Paul Woodman.  Then at 184, Calvin Nicholls (7-12) was pinned by the Mustangs' Sean Dougherty.  In the final bout of the match, Thomas Martin (6-10) lost by 7-1 to Cal Poly's JT Goodwin. 
 
The Gators will return to the mat this coming Friday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Forest Grove, Ore., for two non-conference duals.  SF State will face Simon Fraser at 4pm PST and Pacific University at 7:30pm PST.
