SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators defeated the Cal State East Bay Pioneers in a thrilling five-set match (27-25, 22-25, 25-21, 14-25, 15-11) this evening in a CCAA match at The Swamp.
Jaclyn Clark and
Jacquie Brice led the way for the victors each with double-doubles. Clark had a match high 19 kills and 15 digs while Brice had 46 assists and 16 digs.
"I am really happy with the win this evening," said SF State head coach
Jill Muhe. "Coming down the stretch in the fifth set, we made the plays to win that set and the plays came from a variety of people."
The Gators had 11 total team blocks on the night with
Kaileen Mejia leading the way with five.
SF State (13-16, 8-13 CCAA) also received strong performances from
Meagan Wright and
Melissa Horton. Wright had 12 kills with a .370 hitting percentage while Horton added 11 kills. Senior
Katie Judd added a season high 19 digs for the Gators.
Suzy Ni Xu led the Pioneers with 17 kills while Amber Hall added 11 kills. Ashia Joseph added 49 assists and 17 digs for the visitors.
The first set went back and forth with 13 ties and four lead changes. The set was tied at 25-25 when the Gators'
Kaileen Mejia recorded one of her six kills to give the hosts a 26-25 advantage and an error by the Pioneers gave the first set to SF State.
In the second set, SF State jumped out to a 13-8 lead on a service ace by
Arianna Cruz. The Gators looked like they had the set as they took a 21-19 lead, but the Pioneers scored three of the next four points to tie the match at 22-2 on a kill by Amber Hall.
A service ace by Suzy Ni Xu gave the visitors a 23-22 lead and then Hall recorded one of her 11 kills to give the Pioneers a 24-22 lead. They closed out the set on a hitting error by the Gators to take it 25-22 and even the match at 1-1.
SF State took a 10-5 lead after the 10-minute intermission in the third set. The Gators increased that lead to 17-10 on a Clark kill. They held a 21-14 lead, when the Pioneers scored six of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 24-20.
An attack error by the Gators, put the visitors within three (24-21), but a kill by Mejia finished the set off and gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Cal State East Bay (12-17, 7-14 CCAA) took a 7-0 lead in the fourth set keyed by two service aces by Katie Allen.
SF State cut the deficit to 12-9, but the Pioneers scored 9 of the next 10 points to take a 21-10 lead.
Cal State East Bay took a 23-13 lead on a kill by Xu and then a service by Veronica Sanchez and a kill by Brittany Dominguez gave the set to the Pioneers 25-14 and evened the match at 2-2.
The fifth deciding set started off being tied at 5-5, when the Gators scored 8 of the next 12 points to take a 13-9 lead on a Horton kill.
A kill by Xu cut the Gator lead to 13-10, but a service error by the Pioneers increased it back to four (14-10).
Samantha Bruno recorded a kill on the next serve, but a kill by Wright gave the set to the Gators 15-11 and the match to the hosts 3-2.
The Gators will host Cal State Monterey Bay tomorrow evening in their final match of the season at 7pm. Prior to the match, the Gators will recognize
Katie Judd as their only senior on Senior Night. The Otters lost in three sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-20) at #15 Sonoma State this evening in Rohnert Park.
