Gators Use First Half To Key Non-Conference Win

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators improved to 6-2 with a 77-67 non-conference win over the visiting William Jessup Warriors (5-10) at the Swamp this evening.  For the third straight evening, the Gators received balanced scoring as four players scored in double digits led by Angela Van Sickel's 16 points. 
 
"Tonight we played an inspired first half with contributions from everyone involved," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  "I look forward playing our travel partner tomorrow evening in Sonoma State as it will be a very competitive game."
 
Besides Van Sickel's 16 points, the Gators received Kimmie Fung added 13 points off the bench while Leticia Galarza added 11 points also off the bench.  Katie Batlin also added 12 points for the Gators.
 
The Gators shot 52% from the field including 57% in the first half while holding their opponents to just 42% shooting.  They also forced 16 turnovers by the Warriors.
 
SF State jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and never looked back in this evening's non-conference contest. 
 
The hosts increased their lead to 38-18 with 3:20 left in the half on a Van Sickel jumper.  Leticia Galarza's three gave the Gators a 43-26 lead heading into the locker room.
 
The Warriors cut the Gator lead to 43-34 three minutes into the second half capped by an Ashley Rose jumper, who finished with 22 points. 
 
SF State then went on an 11-0 run to increase its lead back to 20 (54-34) capped by a Lauren Varney lay-up off an assist from Van Sickel.
 
William Jessup kept chipping at the Gator lead and eventually cut it to 75-67 with nine seconds on the clock. 
 
Van Sickel was fouled on the Gators' next possession and connected on both free throws to seal the 77-67 win for SF State.
 
Besides Rose's 22 points, the Warriors received 24 points and 10 rebounds from Sarah Petersen. 
 
SF State will return to conference action tomorrow evening at 5:30pm, when the Gators host Bay Area rival Sonoma State at The Swamp.
