Total Team Effort Fuels Gators' 76-52 Road Win Over CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif. –The visiting SF State Gators used a total team effort to key their 76-52 CCAA road win at Cal St. Monterey Bay this evening at The Kelp Bed.  SF State (10-7, 8-5 CCAA) held the Otters to just 34.5% shooting from the field and out-rebounded its hosts 42-29 in the win.  
 
“We competed very well on the defensive end this evening,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  “Everyone contributed and it was a great team effort.”
 
With the win and a 66-65 loss by Cal State L.A. to Cal State San Bernardino, the Gators move alone into third place in the CCAA. 
 
Calvin Otiono was one of three Gators to score in double figures as he had a game high 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field including hitting on three of his four attempts from beyond the arc.

Besides scoring 19 points, Otiono also had a season high 7 rebounds to go along with four assists and no turnovers in 25 minutes.  Robbie Herndon chipped in 14 points off the bench for SF State while Decensae White added 12 points for the visitors. 
 
Cal St. Monterey Bay (8-12, 4-9 CCAA) was led by Derrick Anderson with 10 points.  The Otters connected on only two of their attempts from beyond the arc with both of them coming off the hands of James Thomas. 
 
SF State took an early 10-4 lead in the first three minutes with William Overton, Jr. scoring seven of those points. 
 
The Gators increased their lead to 18-6, as White capped an 8-2 run by the visitors with 11:17 on the clock. 
 
Cal St. Monterey Bay cut the deficit to 24-15, when Thomas hit his first three at the 7:16 mark of the half.  Otiono's jumper capped an 8-2 run by the Gators as they increased their lead to 32-17 (their largest lead of the half).
 
Brandon Ward's lay-up cut the Otter deficit to 36-23 heading into the locker room.
 
The Gators came out firing in the second half as they outscored Cal St. Monterey Bay 17-10 in the first six minutes to take a 53-33 lead.
 
Two made free throws by Herndon gave the Gators a 69-45 lead, their largest of the game, with 5:48 to go in regulation as they cruised to a 76-52 win.
 
SF State shot 55.6% from the field connecting on 30 of its 54 attempts. 
 
The Gators will now travel across the Bay tomorrow evening for a CCAA showdown with Cal State East Bay.  SF State lost to the Pioneers 80-76 on November 30 in San Francisco.  Cal State East Bay lost 87-70 at home to Sonoma State this evening.
 
“We have to compete as a team tomorrow evening as it will be a big game for us,” added Trevor.
