SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators' men's basketball team sent their three seniors (James Albright, Winston Demmin and Decensae White) out in style with a 79-61 win over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in their home finale of the 2012-13 regular season. The Gators finished their home part of their schedule with a 9-2 record. They improve to 15-9 overall and 13-7 in the CCAA and are alone in third place, one-game behind second place Cal State San Bernardino.
“It was a great night for our seniors,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor. “We shared the ball well tonight and it was a great weekend for the Gators.” We look to continue to get better as we head into the CCAA playoffs.”
It was a pair of juniors that led the way for the Gators in William Overton, Jr. and Calvin Otiono. Overtton paced the hosts with 20 points as he was 5-of-8 from the field including connected on all four of his attempts from beyond the arc. Otiono added 16 points to go along with his 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Another junior, Brandon Tatum had 9 points, 9 rebounds and four assists this evening for the Gators, who are currently ranked 9th in the NCAA Division II West Region.
Two Gator seniors also scored in double figures; Winston Demmin and Decensae White both chipped in 13 points. White just missed a double-double as he had 9 rebounds as well as recording three steals.
Deaundray Robinson paced the 'Jacks (11-13, 7-13 CCAA) with 16 points while Austin Bryan chipped in 12 points.
Overton's back to back three's capped a 14-0 run to begin the game for the Gators.
Humboldt State went on a 12-3 run to cut the Gator lead to 17-12 with 12:25 on the clock in the first half. This was the closest that the 'Jacks would get for the rest of the game.
SF State ended the half outscoring the 'Jacks 26-14 to take a 43-26 lead in the half.
The Gators opened up the second half outscoring Humboldt State, 9-4 to take a 52-20 lead. They increased that lead to 56-32 on a four-point play by Otiono with 13:45 left in the game.
Humboldt State cut the Gator lead to 14 (58-44) with 11:43 on the clock on two made free throws by Austin Bryan, but would not cut the deficit any more as the Gators cruised to a 79-61 victory.
The Gators had a season high 18 assists this season and also forced 17 turnovers and had 5 blocked shots in this evening's victory.
SF State will end the regular season on the road with a pair of games in Southern California. The Gators will face Cal State San Bernardino, who is sixth in the region, on Thursday, February 28 at 7:30pm in San Bernardino, Calif. They will end their regular season with a 7:30pm scheduled game with UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif., the next evening.
