SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.---Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (12-13, 10-11 CCAA) defeated the visiting SF State Gators 68-57 this evening at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino, Calif., in a critical conference contest. With the loss, the Gators fall into a tie for 8th place with Cal State Dominguez Hills while the Coyotes clinched a berth in the 2012-13 CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament next week.
“Very disappointed in our effort in the second half,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. “We have one more game to figure it out.”
Alexcia Mack paced the Coyotes with a game high 18 points with Eliza Day adding 17 points all in the second half. Jaslyn Cosey also scored in double digits with 15 points.
Jennifer Le had 16 points, 14 in the second half, to lead the way for the Gators. Junior post player
Lauren Varney recorded her second double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The first half saw neither team take a lead larger than four with the Coyotes taking a 19-15 lead with 6:06 left in the half on a three by Tayllor Gipson.
SF State (11-14, 8-13 CCAA) outscored its hosts 8-3 to take a 23-22 lead on a
Farrah Shokoor lay-up, but the Coyotes' Mack gave the Coyotes a 24-23 lead heading into the locker room as the buzzer sounded.
The Gators continued their run in the second half as they took a 31-29 lead early in the second half on a jumper by
Michaela Booker.
Cal State San Bernardino went on a 14-2 run and took a 43-33 lead on a jumper by Cosley. The Coyotes increased their lead to 50-37 with a little less than four minutes left in the game and they held on for the 68-57 victory.
The Coyotes will end their regular season tomorrow evening with a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with UC San Diego, whobeat Sonoma State 67-59.
SF State will travel to La Jolla, Calif., for a 5:30pm scheduled contest with UC San Diego. If the Gators win, they clinch the eighth and final spot in the CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament. If SF State loses and Cal State Dominguez Hills defeats Cal Poly Pomona, the Toros will receive the eighth spot.
