Box Score 2 LA JOLLA—Heading out on its last California Collegiate Athletic Association away series, SF State (13-18) was hoping to regain its ground in the conference leaders after dropping some disappointing losses. The Gators struggled to find hits in the first game, falling 3-0 to UC San Diego (19-13), and despite taking the first lead, fell 3-1 in the nightcap.
Kylie Grabowski led the Gators with a pair of hits in each game, finishing 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI in the nightcap. Also picking up hits on the day were
Lucy Fernandez in the first game and
Courtney Gravel,
Jennifer Lewis,
Kelsey Murakami and
Brittany Barcellos in the nightcap.
Going up against one of the CCAA's top pitchers, who came into game one with a conference-best 1.04 ERA, the Gator offense was going to have its work cut out for them. Alexis Edwards and her Triton defense held SF State to just two hits in the 3-0 victory.
UCSD first scored in the bottom of the first inning off three hits, two of which were doubles. While the Gators held the Tritons to the 1-0 lead through three innings, SF State couldn't find its first hit until the top of the fourth.
With one out, Fernandez knocked the first base hit for the Gators through a gap on the left side, but got out in the next play on a fielder's choice to allow
Courtney Gravel to reach first. However, Gravel was left stranded as the Tritons found the third putout to end the inning still in front.
The Tritons struck again in the next half inning, plating another run off two hits and a Gator error to take a 2-0 lead.
SF State had a chance to end the drought in the top of the fifth as
Kelsey Murakami reached first and proceeded to steal second.
Sarah Catania joined her on base with a free ride on ball four, but the Gators came up short sending them home to still trail 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, UCSD added its third and final run to go ahead 3-0. The Gators had another opportunity to add runs to their column in their next chance at the plate as Grabowski singled to left to put runners on first and second. SF State once again came up short, however, ending the game with the 3-0 loss.
After being shutout in the first game, the Gators came out in the nightcap and scored first.
Ashley Huff opened the second contest with a walk down the first base line and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Fernandez. Gravel sent a hit deep to center, allowing Huff to round third and score. The Tritons grabbed a double play to end the inning before the Gators could grab more runs.
The 1-0 lead didn't last long for the Gators as the Tritons tied the game in the bottom of the second. UCSD scored one run off three hits and added the go-ahead run in the third and an insurance run in the fifth to lead 3-1 as the game wound down.
Needing two runs to tie and keep the game alive in the top of the seventh, Grabowski started with a double down the right field line to instill hope in the Gator dugout. The Tritons quickly doused the hope, however, as UC San Diego completed a double play and sealed the victory by grabbing a line drive for the third putout.
SF State will finish the four-game series with UCSD Saturday with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m., hoping to snap a six-game losing streak.
