Gators Fall To #5 Cal Poly Pomona, 60-54 in CCAA Semi's

ONTARIO, Calif  —  The 5th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (25-2) rallied from a six-point deficit with just five minutes left in regulation to defeat the SF State Gators, 60-54 this evening in the 2013 CCAA Basketball Championships Semi-finals at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.  The Gators will now wait until Sunday evening to see if they receive to bid to the NCAA Division II Basketball Championship tournament.  SF State was ranked 10th in the region heading into this weekend with the top 8 receiving bids to the Big Dance. 
 
“I am super proud of my guys,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  “They put us on the map,” added Trevor.  “It's going to be a big loss with the departure of our seniors (Decensae White, Winston Demmin and James Albright).” 
 
Decensae White and William Overton, Jr. paced the Gators (16-12) each with 13 points while Andre Jones chipped in 10 points. 
 
Cal Poly Pomona, who is ranked second in the region, took a 25-19 lead with 2:53 left in the half and took a 30-26 lead on a Mitchel Anderson jumper into the half.
 
SF State came out on fire early in the second half as they outscored the Broncos 15-6 in the first ten minutes to take a 41-36 lead on a three by Jones. 
 
The Broncos cut the lead to 41-40 with under eight minutes on the clock, but SF State came right back and went on a 8-3 run to take a 49-43 on a Overton lay-up. 
 
Cal Poly Pomona would not quit as the Broncos outscored SF State, 11-3 to take a 54-52 lead on a lay-up by Anderson with just 1:52 left in regulation. 
 
On the Gators' next possession, Brandon Tatum's lay-up tied the game at 54-54 with just 1:16 on the clock. 
 
CCAA  Player of the Year, Mitchel Anderson, then was fouled and made both free throws to give the Broncos a 56-54 lead with one minute left. 
 
SF State missed an attempt to tie the game and the Broncos' Anderson connected on one of two free throws, but Cal Poly Pomona got the rebound on the miss which gave the Gators no other option than to foul with 20 ticks on the clock.
 
DeRonn Scott made one of two free throws to give the Broncos a 58-54 lead with 18 ticks.  SF State missed its three attempt and Scott made a lay-up to increase its lead to 60-54.
 
Anderson and Jordan Faison each finished with 12 points to lead the way for the Broncos, who now advance to the championship game tomorrow evening at 7:30pm. They will play the winner of Chico State-Cal State San Bernardino. 
 
“We need to learn from this game and we will be back,” added Trevor.
