PALO ALTO --- SF State Alums Dr. Allen Abraham, Lee Allen,
Lars Jensen (current head coach), and Ashlee Sherman were inducted to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on May 18 at the California State Chapter banquet and induction ceremony. The banquet marked the 20th anniversary of the NWHOF's State Chapter program and has honored 2,024 individuals across the United States since its start in 1993.
Dr. Abraham wrestled and played football at SF State from 1958-61 and claimed the Far Western Conference title at 191 pounds in his final year as a Gator. He went on to finish second at the PCI Championships and was selected to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. II All-America football team. Dr. Abraham went on to pursue a coaching career after his collegiate playing days and was five times selected as the FWC Coach of the Year. He currently is a professor of kinesiology and associate department chair at SF State.
While Allen didn't compete as a Gator, the former wrestler was a coaching colleague of Dr. Abraham while working on his master's degree at SF State. Allen graduated with a Master's of Health and Human Services in 1969 from SF State and continued coaching in the sport until he retired in 1996.
Jensen, who has been the head wrestling coach at SF State for the past 30 years, won the NCAA West Region 190 pound title after taking second in the FWC championships in 1980. He qualified for the national championship twice and was a California Collegiate Wrestling Champion and a North-South California Collegiate All-Star Champion in 1980--he also went on to qualify for the US Olympic Trials twice. As coach of the Gators, Jensen has led 59 student-athletes to achieve All-American status, including nine NCAA Champions. In 1997, Jensen coached his group of grapplers to SF State's first-ever Div. II National Championship.
Sherman transferred to SF State as a junior and went on to claim the FWC championship in 1969 at the 158 class. He was also selected as the Gators' Outstanding Wrestler that year after qualifying for the Div. II National Championship Tournament, grabbing All-American status after placing in the top six. Sherman went on to become an alternate on the 1976 US Olympic Greco-Roman team and currently teaches and coaches at Oakland Technical High School.
These four, along with six other 2013 inductees, will have their names appear on the State Chapter Wall in the John Vaughan Hall of Honors at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla.
