ROHNERT PARK--- The SF State Gators' volleyball team went 1-1 today in the first day of the Seawolf Spike Invitational in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Gators (4-2) defeated Dominican (Calif.) 25-15, 25-12, 25-12 and lost to Hawaii Pacific in four sets (14-25, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25).
"I am very pleased with our performance this morning," said first-year head coach
Jill Muhe. "Beating a team twice can be tough so I am very happy we rose to the challenge."
In the first set against the Penguins (1-6), the match was tied at 7-7 when the Gators scored 11 of the next 13 points to take an 18-9 advantage. During that span, SF State took advantage of some Dominican (CA) miscues and recorded five kills.
The Gators ended the set scoring 7 of the final 13 points to take the set 25-15 capped by a
Kelly Ostello kill.
The second set saw the Gators jump out to a 12-4 lead, which the Penguins never recovered. SF State had five straight points received by kills (three by
Melissa Horton and two by Megan Wright). Horton had two of the Gators' final four points including the deciding kill as SF State took the set 25-12.
The Gators continued to roll in the third set as they built a 17-6 lead with
Kaileen Mejia recording back to back kills to give SF State its lead.
Ostello had the deciding kill to give the Gators the set, 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Horton led the way with her 11 kills and her .360 hitting percentage. Mejia had a .667 hitting percentage with six kills and no errors while Ostello and Wright had 9 and 7 kills respectively.
Jacquie Brice had 35 assists and
Jessica Nicerio added 15 digs.
In their second and final match of the day, the Gators fell in four sets to the Hawaii Pacific Sea Warriors 14-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21.
"Hawaii Pacific is a very strong team with lots of different offensive options," added Muhe. They are also strong defensively and made it very hard to for us to win rallies."
Hawaii Pacific (5-0) had three players record double digits in kills with Samantha Rummans and Elizabeth Culpepper leading the way each with 11.
The Sea Warriors jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first set and never looked back as five points came off of Gator hitting errors.
SF State cut the deficit to 16-12 as the Sea Warriors had a hitting error with Nicerio serving for the Gators.
Hawaii Pacific bounced back and held on for the 25-14 set one win.
The second set was different as the score went back and forth and the biggest lead being a three-point advantage by Hawaii Pacific.
SF State held a 19-17 lead, but its opponents scored five of the set's next six points to take a 22-20 lead. The Gators' Ostello had a kill to cut their deficit to 22-21, but the Sea Warriors received two kills in the final six points from Rummans to take the set 25-21.
SF State came out strong in the third set as the Gators took a 15-11 advantage on a kill by Ostello.
Hawaii Pacific cut the deficit to 19-18 on a service ace by Hannah Schuett, but the Gators closed out the match with Brice's service ace giving the Gators the 25-20 set three win.
The fourth set saw SF State take a 10-8 advantage on a kill by
Jazmine Williams, which was the last time that the Gators had the lead.
A kill by Pomai Recca gave the Sea Warriors a 14-13 lead, a lead they would not give up as they held on for the 25-21 victory and 3-1 match victory.
Horton and Mejia each had 9 kills for the Gators while Nicerio had 15 digs.
SF State will return to the court tomorrow morning at 9am as the Gators take on #12 Western Washington (5-0) and Montana State Billings (2-4) at 1:30pm in the final day of the Seawolf Spike.
