ROHNERT PARK— SF State's volleyball team finished the 2013 Seawolf Classic 2-2 by going 1-1 this afternoon. The Gators started the day with a three-set loss (21-25, 8-25, 21-25) loss to #12 Western Washington. They then rebounded with a three-set win (25-10, 25-21, 25-22) over Montana State-Billings to improve to 5-3 on the season.
"Overall this was a good weekend for us," said SF State head coach
Jill Muhe. "While we could have liked to come out of it with a couple of more wins, we learned a lot and grew as a team."
In the Gators' first match of the day against the nationally ranked Western Washington Vikings (7-0), SF State hit just for a .130 percentage while its opponents had a .373 hitting percentage with the Vikings' Kayla Erickson leading the way with 17 kills.
Kelly Ostello and
Meagan Wright led the way for the Gators each with 8 kills with
Jessica Nicerio recording 16 digs.
Western Washington also had 12 total team blocks with Emily Boerger's 6 total blocks leading the way for the Vikings.
The Vikings came out on fire in the early morning match as they took a 7-2 lead keyed by two kills by Erickson. SF State came right back to score 8 of the next 11 points to take a 10-8 lead capped by back to back kills by
Melissa Horton and Wright.
Western Washington tied the set at 12-12 on an Erickson kill, but the Gators scored the next three points to take a 15-12 lead on a service ace by Horton.
SF State held the lead for the last time of the set at 18-17 with the Vikings finishing off the set scoring 8 of the final 12 points to take the 25-21 set one win.
In the second set, Wright had back to back kills to tie the match at 3-3. Western Washington though scored the next four points with two Gator hitting errors and two kills by Kelsey Moore giving them a 7-3 lead.
SF State cut the deficit to 9-6 on a kill by Ostello, but the Vikings once again went on a rally as they scored 12 of the next 13 points to take a 21-7 lead. They finished the set scoring four of the final five points to take set two 25-8.
The Gators would not go away in set three started tied at 4-4. Western Washington though took a 16-8 lead.
SF State cut the deficit to 22-18 on a kill by
Jaclyn Clark. Erickson's kill gave the Vikings a 23-18 lead, but the Gators scored the next two points on a kill by Ostello and an ace by Clark to cut the lead to just three (23-20).
A kill by the Vikings' Rachel Roeder gave them a 24-20 and then Horton's kill and put the Gators within three again, 24-21. With the Gators' serving, Moore recorded a kill off an assist from Taylor Dillard to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
SF State rebounded later in the day with a three set win over the Yellow Jackets of Montana State-Billings (2-5). In this match, the Gators hit for a .327 hitting percentage with six Gators recording over .300 in
Jazmine Williams (.750),
Kayce Skocko (.500),
Kaileen Mejia (.500), Wright (.429), Ostello (.364) and
Jacquie Brice (.329).
Brice also had 41 assists and Nicerio had four of SF State's five service aces.
The Gators took a 6-1 lead in the first set with Clark's two kills keying SF State's rally.
Montana State-Billings cut the lead to 10-7 on a kill by Monica Grimsrud, but the Gators scored the next seven points to increase their lead to 17-7. During that span, Williams had three kills.
Three consecutive kills by Wright and Skocko gave the Gators a 23-10 lead. They then closed out the set as Montana State-Billings had two hitting errors to give SF State the set 25-10.
Set two was evenly played with it going back and forth for the first 30 points as a Gator hitting error tied the match at 15-15.
The Gators had back to back kills by Mejia and Ostello as they took a 17-15 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
Back to back kills by Wright gave SF State a 23-20 lead but Ashlynn Ward's kill cut the Gator lead to 23-21. SF State scored the final two points to take a 2-0 match advantage.
SF State took a 4-1 advantage in the final set after the break, but the Yellow Jackets scored 7 of the next 10 points to take a 8-7 lead on back to back kills by Monica Grimsrud.
Horton's kill stopped the Yellow Jacket rally to tie the set at 8-8. The set went back and forth with a kill by Clark giving the Gators a 15-14 lead.
Two hitting errors by Montana State-Billings increased the Gator lead to 17-14. The Yellow Jackets would not go away as they cut the deficit to 19-18 on another kill by Grimsrud.
Three kills by Ostello gave the Gators a 22-20 lead, but once again Montana State-Billings cut the lead to just one (22-21) on a kill by Chelsey Walter. The Yellow Jackets' had a service error to give SF State a 23-21 lead. They then called a time out and came out of the one minute break cut the lead to 23-22 on another Grimsrud kill.
SF State closed out the match on kills by Wright and Williams to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
The Gators will open up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this coming weekend with two home matches. SF State will host #13 UC San Diego this Friday, September 20 and then the next evening the Gators will host #18 Cal State San Bernardino. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7pm at The Swamp on SF State's campus.
