SEASIDE, Calif.—  The SF State Gators avenged an earlier loss from the weekend to the Academy of Art University Urban Knights as they defeated their opponents in three sets (31-29, 25-19, 25-16) to capture the 2013 Otter Classic late this evening in Seaside, Calif.  The Gators finished the weekend 3-1 heading into next weekend's Seawolf Spike in Rohnert Park, Calif.

"Playing at 10pm would be tough anytime, but to have played early this morning and then wait and play so late is really hard," said Gator head coach Jill Muhe.  "I am very proud of the way the team handled this tough situation."  "It is great to come out of this rematch with a victory."

Classic Most Valuable Player, Meagan Wright, led the way for the Gators with 11 kills and 14 digs.  Two other Gators were also named to the All-Tournament Team in Jaclyn Clark and Jacquie Brice.  Clark had 10 kills, 19 digs and 5 aces in the Gators win and Brice had 31 assists and a .286 hitting percentage.  Also recording double digits in kills was Kaileen Mejia with 10 kills (.333 hitting percentage) to go with her three total blocks.

At the beginning of the match, it looked like was going to be the Gators' third straight five-set match.  Two kills by Mejia gave the Gators an early 6-4 lead.  They increased that lead to 15-6 with Kayce Skocko serving two aces and a kill by Jaclyn Clark capping the Gator rally.

SF State then took a 19-9 lead, but the Urban Knights did not go away in the first set.  They cut the deficit to 20-16 as they capitalized on some Gator miscues.  SF State bounced back as they scored the next four points with Mejia recorded two of the four points on kills to give the Gators a 24-20 lead.

The Gators could not close the set out as the Urban Knights recorded the next five points to take a 25-24 lead.  The set went back and forth until SF State secured the win 31-29 on a service ace by Clark and a kill by Wright.

SF State continued its momentum from the first set win as the Gators took a 13-3 lead in the second set.  Academy of Art cut the deficit to 18-15 on a kill by Emily Papale, but could not get any closer as the Gators took the set 25-19.

Then in the third set, the Gators once again went on top as they took a 7-2 lead with Mejia capping SF State's strong start.  Jazmine Williams' kill gave SF State a 15-9 lead, but the Urban Knights scored the next three points capped by a kill by Melissa Brum to cut the lead to 15-12.  This was the closest they would get as the Gators went on for the 25-16 victory.  With the victory, SF State took the match 3-0.

SF State will return to the court this Friday, September 13 as the Gators will participate in the Seawolf Spike on the campus of Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif.  The Gators will start off their play in the Seawolf Spike with a 9am PDT starting match with Dominican (CA).  SF State defeated the Penguins in five sets earlier this morning.  The Gators will also face Hawaii Pacific, Western Washington and Montana State-Billings in next weekend's tournament.
