Nefi Perdomo and
Udun Osakue, the SF State Gators bounced back with a 82-68 conference home win over the visiting UC San Diego Tritons.
Nefi Perdomo paced the Gators with a game high 29 points while Osakue added 16 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. The Gators finished the night 25-for-28 from the line with three players going a combined 18-for-18 in Perdomo, Osakue and
Erik Fearn.
"I was very pleased how the guys responded after a tough loss last night," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "Now we begin the second part of the journey next weekend in Seaside as we need to keep battling."
The Gators (8-5, 6-4 CCAA) scored the games' first seven points of the game and never looked back. They increased their lead to 18-9 on a jumper by
Max Fodor.
UC San Diego cut the deficit to 20-19 at the 7:15 mark on a Hunter Walker jumper, but the Gators went on a 19-4 run capped by a
Bren Haley lay-up with just two minutes left in the half to take a 39-23 lead.
Osakue's tip-in gave the Gators a 42-29 lead heading into halftime.
UC San Diego cut the Gator lead to single digits, 49-40, on a James McCann jumper in the first four minutes of the new stanza. The hosts came right back and increased their lead to 61-48 on a three by
Derrick Brown off an assist from Osakue.
The Tritons (7-7, 3-7 CCAA) would not go away as they cut the Gator lead to 67-64 on a three by McCann at the 7:21 mark of the second half.
The Gators increased their lead back to double digits, 79-68, on two made free throws by
Will Overton, Jr. as the hosts held on for the 82-68 win.
UC San Diego had five players in double figures led by Drew Dyer with 15 points.
SF State also out-rebounded the Tritons 38-25 and held them to just 42% shooting from the field.
With the win, the Gators are now in sixth place in the CCAA one game out of third place which is held by Chico State, Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State L.A.
The Gators will go back on the road for four straight games beginning this Friday, January 24 in Seaside, Calif., for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Monterey Bay.
