KEARNEY, Neb.--- SF State went 3-1 at the Second Annual UNK Midwest Duals at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, Neb., this afternoon as the 19
th ranked Gators improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in dual meets. Two of the Gators' three wins were against NCAA Division II Top 15 teams in Western State Colorado (9
th) and Adams State (11
th).
Junior
Andrew Reggi went a perfect 4-0 to improve to 19-5 on the season. Including in his four wins was a 3-1 decision over Sam Mangum of Western State Colorado, who was ranked 7
th in the nation.
The Gators started off their day with a 26-16 win over the 11
th ranked Adams State Grizzlies (2-1, 1-1 RMAC). The Gators picked up wins at six of the 10 weight classes including a win by fall at 184 by
Zach Jimenez at 4:04.
SF State started off with a win by major decision, 15-6, by
Marc Collier over the Grizzlies' Ian Wingstrom. SF State took a 7-0 lead with a win by a 7-2 decision by
Isaiah Hurtado over Martin Ramirez.
Adams State took a 10-7 lead after winning the next three matches including a win by a 9-1 major decision by Ryan Fillingame over the Gators'
Dylan Phillipy at 141. Fillingame is currently the number one ranked wrestler at 141.
The two teams split the next two matches with the Gators winning by forfeit at 165 (
Vicente Aboytes) and Adams State winning by fall by Mark Mabry (4:29) to give the Grizzlies the 16-13 lead.
The Gators took the lead for good with win by fall at 184 by
Zach Jimenez (4:04) over Nevada Bencomo.
SF State won the final two matches by major decision (
Andrew Reggi 11-2 at 197) and decision (
Hildelv Manzur 3-2 at 285) to take the dual 26-16.
In their next dual of the day, the Gators lost 18-13 to the Chadron State Eagles. The Gators (4-2, 1-1 RMAC) picked up wins from Collier, Phillipy, Reggi and Manzur. With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the RMAC.
Collier started the dual with a 6-3 win by decision over the Eagles' Taylor Summers. The Eagles tied the dual at 3-3 with a 7-6 win by Dustin Stodola over the Gators'
Isaiah Hurtado. Stodola is currently ranked fourth in the nation at 133.
SF State took a 7-3 lead as
Dylan Phillipy won by a 10-0 major decision at 141. Chadron State won the next five straight matches all by decisions at 149, 165, 174 and 184 to take an 18-7 lead heading into the final two matches. Three of the wins by the Eagles were by two points or less as
Conrad Snell lost to the Eagles' Jacob Anderson by a 7-6 decision at 149, Tyler Smart defeated the Gators'
Vicente Aboytes by a 4-3 decision at 165 and
Zach Jimenez lost by a 4-2 decision at 184 to the Eagles' Jordan DeBus.
The Gators won the final two matches by a 7-1 decision at 197 by
Andrew Reggi and a 5-2 decision at 285 by
Hildelv Manzur.
The Gators defeated No. 9 Western State Colorado 24-12 in their next dual. SF State won the first four matches to take an 18-0 including two wins by fall by
Dylan Phillipy (141) and
Conrad Snell (149).
Jordan Gurrola won his match at 125 by a 7-0 decision and
Isaiah Hurtado won by an 11-6 decision at 133.
Western State Colorado (7-4, 3-1 RMAC) won the next match at 149 as Shawn Seppala defeated the Gators'
Tavis Ino by a 4-2 decision.
Vicente Aboytes increased the Gators' lead to 21-3 with a 6-4 decision at 165.
The Mountaineers won the next two matches to cut into the Gator lead, 21-9. Austin Harris won by a 7-3 decision at 174 over
Calvin Nicholls. Kyle Piatt, who is currently sixth in the nation at 184, defeated the Gators'
Zach Jimenez by a slim 9-8 decision.
The Gators came back with a 3-1 decision by
Andrew Reggi over Sam Mangum, who is currently 7
th in the nation, to give SF State a 24-9 lead heading into the final match. Lane Stuht defeated the Gators'
Hildelv Manzur by a 3-2 decision at 285 to make the final Gators, 24-12.
SF State finished off with a 29-12 win over the Northern State Wolves. The Gators lost the first match as
Jordan Gurrola fell in a 6-4 decision at 125. The Gators took a 14-3 lead as they won the next three matches with two by major decisions (
Isaiah Hurtado-133 and
Dylan Phillipy-141) and won by fall at 149 by
Conrad Snell at 1:02.
The Wolves won the next match with a 4-3 decision by Sean Havlovic at 157 over the Gators'
Tavis Ino. The Gators took a 20-6 lead as
Vicente Aboytes won by forfeit at 165.
Northern State cut the Gator lead to 20-12 as Blake Lundgren won by fall (4:21) at 174 over
Calvin Nicholls.
SF State won final matches at 184, 197 and 285 by decisions with
Zach Jimenez winning 13-11 and
Andrew Reggi winning 3-2 and
Hildelv Manzur winning 5-3 to make the final 29-12.
SF State will return home next Saturday, January 25 at 1pm, when they host Stanford University. The Cardinal is currently ranked No. 24 in the nation in Division I.
