Box Score 2 San Bernardino – The SF State softball team could not avoid the big inning, losing both game of Saturday's double header as the Gators were swept on the road by Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyote took game one 5-2 before defeating the Gators 10-2 in six innings in the finale.
In both games the Coyotes (29-21/16-16 CCAA) scored three run in the fifth in game one, and five runs in the sixth in game two to help Cal State San Bernardino record the series sweep. The Gators (17-34/8-24 CCAA) had 11 hits on the day, three from
Jennifer Lewis and two each from
Kelsey Murakami,
Lucy Fernandez, and
Courtney Gravel.
In game one the Gators scored first, tallying two run in the top of the first inning. Gravel started the rally with a double to right field, she moved over to third on a sac bunt and scored the game's first run on an RBI base hit up the middle by Lewis. With two outs Murakami doubled to left field scoring Lewis easily.
From there Coyotes starter Cassandra Williams (15-11) settled down, after giving up the three hits and two runs in the first she kept the Gators offense quiet, holding them to just three more hits the rest of the way. Williams finished the day, throwing a six hit complete game, scattering two runs, while striking out six.
SF State's starter
Courtney Dunkel (2-5) did her best to make the two runs hold up, she pitched very effectively for four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. For the afternoon Dunkel went 4.0 plus inning, surrendering five hits, five runs, four earned with a pair of walks.
The Coyotes got on the board in the bottom of the third, with the help of the Gators three errors. In the bottom of the fourth they tied the game scoring a run on two hits. Cal State San Bernardino broke the tie with an RBI triple down the right field line by Daria Manuz in the bottom of the fifth. The Coyotes scored two more insurance runs in the fifth to end the day for Dunkel.
Megan Clark finished the game for the Gators, throwing two innings, allowing three hits, with a strike out.
In the nightcap the Coyotes struck first, racing out to an early four nothing lead, scoring three in the first and one in the second.
The game started on a sour note for the Gators as starter
Jenny Obbema was in trouble immediately, surrendering a lead-off home run by Thalia Ortiz. CSUSB scored two more run on three hits.
Obbema faced just nine batters, going just one inning, surrendering three hits, three runs, all earned with two walks.
Emily Gibson took the ball for the Gators in the bottom of the second and kept the Gators in the game until she ran into trouble in the fateful sixth inning. She went 4.1 innings, allowing 13 hits, six run, five earned.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Coyotes scored five runs to go up eight and complete the sweep. Ortiz ended it with an RBI single to right field.
The Gators scored two runs in the top half of the inning. Fernandez did the damage, blasting a two-run double to right center scoring Lewis and
Selina Rodriguez.
The Gators return to action on Friday, April 25 when they begin their final homestand of the season, hosting Sonoma State for a four-game CCAA series starting at 1:00 p.m.
