Box Score Turlock, Calif. – The SF State gators tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning and had a chance to win it in seven, but ultimately fell to Saint Mary's 3-1 in eight innings to complete their fantastic run in the 13th Annual Tournament of Champions Presented by Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau in Turlock on Sunday morning.
Sophomore
Jenny Obbema took the ball for the Gators (14-27) to start their sixth and final game of the tournament and pitched well. She went five innings, scattering six hits, allowing one run with two walks and two strike outs.
She ran into trouble in the top of the fourth inning when the Saints loaded the bases with two outs. A single off the bat of pinch hitter Corrie Wilson scored the go ahead run and kept the bases loaded. Obbema ended the threat getting the batter Lacey McGladrey to strike out looking on a nasty 2-2 offering.
Saint Martin's (18-13) starter Sam Munger(13-8) was tough early, matching Obbema zero for zero. The Gators finally broke through scoring the tying run in the home half of the fourth inning.
Lucy Fernandez started the rally with a one out base hit through the left side, she moved to second when
Kelsey Murakami drew a walk.
Kylie Grabowski knocked in Fernandez from second with a base hit back up the middle. Munger ended the threat getting a pair of ground balls to end the inning.
Obbema pitched a scoreless fifth inning to finish the day. For the tournament, the sophomore went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in three appearances.
Freshman
Courtney Dunkel (1-3) took the ball for the Gators in the sixth inning and pitched well once again for SF State. She went three complete innings, allowing two hits, two runs, one earned with two strike outs.
The Saints scored the winning runs in the top of the eighth inning. Taviah Jenkins was placed at second base to start the rally, she scored unearned in a ground rule double to center field off the bat of Dani Wall. Wall later scored on a two-out double by Mary Dettling.
The Gators went down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game, as Munger went the distance, scattering three hits, one earned run, three walks and four strike outs.
The Gators will return home to face Notre Dame de Namur for a double header on Wednesday, April 9 with game one starting at 2:00 p.m. at the SF State softball field.
