San Francisco, Calif. – The SF State softball team fresh of an impressive showing in the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus will square off against two teams that also competed in last weekend's tournament. The Gators will start the week hosting Notre Dame de Namur for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the week playing a four-game CCAA series against No. 20 UC San Diego starting Friday at 1 p.m.
SF State enters this week with an overall record of 14-27 after going 4-2 in the Tournament of Champions, which included a 3-0 shutout over No. 2 Cal Baptist. As a team, the squad is hitting .260, averaging 2.82 runs per game. Last weekend, the Gators as a team hit .265 and averaged 4.66 runs per game.
Leading SF State at the dish is junior shortstop
Courtney Gravel who is hitting .362, her 50 hits leads the team and is eighth in the CCAA. Sophomore center fielder
Jennifer Lewis is second on the team in average (.347) and hits (42), she leads the Gators with 20 RBI. She drove in six last weekend.
Freshman outfielder
Aryn Guzman had a breakout weekend, en route to being named to the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament Team. Guzman hit .375 going 6-for-16 with a double and her first career home run.
In the circle the Gators had a dominating weekend. SF State boasted a staff ERA of 2.80 with
Courtney Dunkel earning her first career win, throwing a complete game in the 9-1 win over Academy of Art on Saturday.
Jenny Obbema went 1-0, sporting a 2.21 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched.
Megan Clark finished the weekend going 2-1, which included a three-hit shutout against the Lancers. On the year she is 6-10 with a team-leading 3.23 ERA. Her 106.1 innings pitched ranks 10
th in the conference, while her 56 strike outs are ninth in the CCAA.
The Argonauts enter Wednesday's contest with an overall record of 16-24 and went 1-6 at the Tournament of Champions including a 4-3 loss to the Gators to wrap-up Friday's triple-header. As a team, the Argonauts are hitting .252 and averaging 3.87 runs per game. Senior catcher Kayla Anderson leads the team with a .324 average while junior infielder Breanna Younger leads the team with seven home runs, nine doubles and 32 runs driven in.
In the circle Notre Dame de Namur boasts a staff ERA of 4.32, in 264.1 innings pitched they have allowed 317 hits, with 131 walks to 173 strike outs. Freshman Jenna Bassler leads the team with a 3.36 ERA and a 10-7 mark.
UC San Diego enters Friday's contest ranked No. 20 in the nation according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The Tritons sport a 28-7 record after going 6-1 in the Tournament of Champions. Three players are hitting over .400 with Callie Grant leading the team with a .432 average, her 51 hits and 37 runs is tops on the team.
In the circle UCSD sports a staff ERA of 2.65, in 235 innings they have held opponents to a .241 average. Leading the team with 15 starts and 20 appearances is Alexis Edwards who is 16-2 with a 1.33 ERA.
Saturday's contest will mark the Gators' annual Strikeout Cancer day, where they recognize breast cancer survivors; there will be a ceremonial first pitch before the game which starts at 11:00 a.m. All proceeds from that day's game will go to the Susan G Komen foundation.
