Box Score CHICO –The SF State Gators improved to 2-1 this afternoon as they defeated two opponents in a neutral site non-conference match at Chico State's University Stadium. The Gators blanked the Saint Martin's Saints 1-0 and also withstood the 98 degree heat in Chico.
Â
"We had two opponents today...... Saint Martin's and the heat with the temperature around 98 degree today in Chico," said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. "Not only did we win the match, but we won the battle of the extreme heat."
Â
The Gators dominated the match today as they held a 12-3 advantage in shot attempts including 3-2 in shot on goals. They also had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Allison Land had two saves in her first shutout of the season for the victorious Gators while Sunny DeBoer had three saves in goal for Saint Martin's (0-2-1).
Â
It looked like the Gators were going to take an early 1-0 lead at the 28:00 mark of the first half, but
Brittany Oldham's shot was stopped by DeBoer as the score was scoreless heading into the 15 minute halftime.
Â
11 minutes into the second half,
Elizet Ceja connected on her first goal of the season off a ball from
Kelsey Wetzstein. This was Wetzstein's second assist of the season as she assisted on the game-winning goal in the Gators' season opener against Academy of Art.
Â
The Saints tried to tied the match with less than ten seconds to go, but
Allison Land came up with her second save of the day stopping Clarissa Strayer's shot attempt to preserve the 1-0 Gator win.
"(Elizet) Ceja, (Sarah) Guensler, and (Stephanie) Vanni anchored our total team effort victory today," added Hyde.
Â
SF State will return to the pitch in Fresno, Calif., this Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30pm, when the Gators face Fresno Pacific. Â
