SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State hosted four duals this afternoon at SF State's Main Gym at the Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gators lost to No. 18 Cal Baptist 25-12 in their first bout, but finished the day with a 43-6 win over Simon Fraser. Cal Baptist defeated Simon Fraser 48-0 earlier in the day and Minnesota State-Moorhead (4-4) defeated the Clan 49-0.
In the Gators' match against Cal Baptist (13-4, 6-2 RMAC), Matt Hickman gave the Lancers a 3-0 lead as he defeated SF State's
Dylan Furtado by a 4-1 decision at 149. Nolan Kistler recorded a win by forfeit at 157 for the Lancers.
Vicente Aboytes (15-10) picked up a win at 165 as he defeated the Lancers' Alec Smith by a 5-3 decision to cut the Cal Baptist lead to 9-3.
Cal Baptist won the next two matches by a 12-3 major decision at 174 and a 4-1 decision at 184 to take a 16-3 lead. Christian Smith defeated the Gators'
Calvin Nicholls at 174 and the eighth ranked Jacob Waste won by a 4-1 decision at 184 over
Johnny Costa of SF State.
Andrew Reggi put the Gators back on the board with a 10-5 decision over the Lancers' Paul Head to cut the deficit to 16-6. In a close match at 285, David Dill gave the Lancers a 19-6 lead with a 4-3 decision over
Sam Alnassiri.
The visitors took the next match at 125 by a 9-2 decision as Christian Betancourt defeated
Brandon Vu.
SF State's
Jordan Gurrola (22-7) recorded his 10
th win by fall as he pinned the Lancers' Zach McKenna in 3:20. Peter Cunningham, who is eighth in the nation, won by an 8-3 decision over the Gators'
Daniel Flores as Cal Baptist won 25-12 over SF State.
Furtado (14-6) gave the Gators an early 4-0 lead with a 13-1 major decision over Simon Fraser's Kenji Yamashita in SF State's next match.
The Clan (1-6) won the next match at 157 by forfeit as Victor Kwan took the win to give Simon Fraser a 6-4 lead. Aboytes gave the Gators back the lead with a win by forfeit at 165.
SF State (8-4, 4-3 RMAC) took the next bouts by decision to increase its lead to 16-6. Nicholls (4-7) won by a come-from-behind 4-3 decision over the Clan's Morgan Smith at 174. Then at 184, Costa improved to 15-11 with an 8-1 decision over Josh Kim.
In a quick match at 197,
Andrew Reggi won by fall in just thirty-one seconds over the Clan's Ben Smyth. This was Reggi's third win by fall. The eighth ranked grappler improved to 18-6 on the season.
Alnassiri, improved to 14-10, with an exciting 5-4 win in the third round of the tiebreaker over Sean Molle.
SF State won the next three bouts by forfeit with Vu (16-13), Gurrola and Flores (11-6) all picking up wins for the hosts as they won 43-6 over the Clan.
The Gators (7-3, 4-2 RMAC) will return to the mat when they host the 39
th Annual California Collegiate Open tomorrow morning starting at 9am. All four teams from today's duals will be participating in tomorrow's open along with Oregon State, Boise State, Cal State Bakersfield, Menlo College, Cal Poly, Southern Oregon, and members of Stanford's wrestling team.
