SAN FRANCISCO – Coming off a strong performance at the Menlo Invitational this past weekend, the SF State Gator grapplers will return to the mat this weekend for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) matches against nationally ranked Western State and Colorado Mesa. The Gators will face No. 8 Western State and No. 20 Colorado Mesa this Thursday, January 8 in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Gators captured the Menlo Invitational for the second consecutive year and had seven wrestlers that placed in the top four in their respective weight classes.
Zac Contreras and
Andrew Reggi each won their weight class while
Tavis Ino and
Peter Santos each finished second.
Vicente Aboytes captured third while
Dylan Furtado and
Tanner Blank each placed fourth.
This will be the Gators' first dual since their 40-3 win over NAIA #15 Simpson University in Redding, Calif., on Dec. 13. With that win over the Red Hawks, SF State improved to 2-0 in duals. The Gators other dual win was a 24-9 win over Cal Poly on November 8 in San Luis Obispo.
Reggi is currently ranked sixth in the nation at 197 with his 10-4 record. Including Reggi, six Gators have compiled 10+ wins this season.
Jordan Gurrola is 14-5 at 133 while
Dylan Furtado is 12-5 at 149 and
Brandon Vu is 12-7 at 125. Besides Reggi, two other Gator grapplers have ten wins in
Johnny Costa (10-6 at 174) and
Tavis Ino (10-8 at 149).
Five other SF State wrestlers have compiled winning records in
Alex Abono (4-2 at 157),
Vicente Aboytes (8-6 at 165),
Zac Contreras (6-1 at 157),
Jerry DeLaRosa (8-5 at 141) and
Peter Santos (9-7 at 174).
SF State will face the Western State Colorado Mountaineers at 4pm PST on Thursday. This will be the Mountaineers' first dual of the season. They have not wrestled since their third place showing on December 13 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis. At the Midwest Classic, Austin Harris captured the title at 165. Kyle Piatt, who is currently fifth in the nation, also finished third for the Mountaineers.
The Gators will then face the Colorado Mesa Mavericks at 6pm PST on Thursday. The Mavericks are 2-0 in duals after defeating Sierra College 50-3 and Embry-Riddle 40-6 earlier this season. They have not wrestled since December 20 when the Mountaineers placed 9
th at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. At the Tournament of Champions, James Martinez finished in fifth place at 157.
After this Thursday duals, the Gators will return to the mat in Kearney, Neb., as they will participate in the UNK Duals on January 17 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. SF State will take on four RMAC opponents in Adams State, Chadron State, New Mexico Highlands and Colorado Schools of Mines. The Gators will return home on January 23 at noon when they host Embry-Riddle.
