GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The SF State Gator grapplers returned to the mat this evening in Grand Junction, Colo., for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) duals against nationally ranked opponents in Western State Colorado and Colorado Mesa. The Gators came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard in both duals to fall to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.
Peter Santos was victorious for the Gators in both matches to improve to 11-7 on the season.
SF State started its dual with the eighth ranked Mountaineers down 3-0 as Trenton Piatt defeated the Gators'
Brandon Vu by a 9-7 decision as Piatt scored four unanswered points in the final minutes of the match. SF State tied the dual at 3-3 when
Jordan Gurrola upset the sixth ranked Zachar Shank at 133 by a 9-6 decision. Gurrola captured the match scoring the final three points including the final two on a two-point near fall.
The Gators went down 7-3 as Corbin Bennetts won by a 9-0 major decision at 141 over
Jerry DeLaRosa (8-7). SF State's match at 149 was all tied up at 2-2 heading into the final period, but Western State's Devon Zavala scored the final four points over
Tavis Ino (10-10) to give the Mountaineers a 10-3 lead.
In another close match at 157, Shawn Beiriger of Western State gave the Mountaineers a 13-3 lead with a 9-7 win by decision over the Gators'
Zac Contreras (6-3).
Western State (1-0, 1-0 RMAC) took a 19-3 lead as Austin Harris won by fall at 3:48 over the Gators'
Vicente Aboytes.
SF State got back on the board with a 6-0 decision by
Peter Santos over Jaden Olearnick to cut the deficit to 19-6 heading into the final three matches.
The fifth ranked Kyle Piatt won by a close 7-5 decision at 184 over the Gators'
Johnny Costa. Piatt was leading 3-0 heading into the third period when Costa took a 4-3 lead, but scored four of the matches' final five points including one by riding time to take the victory.
In a match between two nationally ranked wrestlers, it was the Mountaineers winning by a 4-0 decision over the Gators'
Andrew Reggi. Mangum is fifth in the nation while Reggi is sixth. Western State won the final match of the dual by fall at 2:02 when Peter Anguiano pinned
Tanner Blank to give the Mountaineers the 31-6 victory.
SF State (2-2, 0-2 RMAC) went down early against the 20
th ranked Mavericks (3-0, 1-0 RMAC) in its second dual of the evening. Colby Christensen gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead with a 18-2 technical fall win at the 2:53 mark of the match over SF State's
Brandon Vu (12-9).
In a close match at 133, it was the Gators'
Jordan Gurrola (15-6) falling 5-3 to Colorado Mesa's Jonathon Sterling. The Mavericks won the three bouts by fall, major decision and technical fall to take a 23-0 lead.
At 165, Jessie Hoffschneider increased the Mavericks' lead to 26-0 with a 5-0 win by decision over SF State's
Vicente Aboytes (8-8).
SF State's Santos improved to 2-0 on the evening and 11-7 on the year as he won by a 9-1 major decision at 174 over the Maverick's Randy Boerner to cut the Gator deficit to 26-4.
Then at 184,
Johnny Costa (10-8) lost by a 4-0 decision to the Mavericks' Mitch Wyatt. The Gators'
Andrew Reggi improved to 11-5 at 197 with a 7-0 win by decision over Colorado Mesa's Willy Holden. In the final bout of the match, Jordan Passehl won by fall at 2:04 over the Gators'
Tanner Blank (3-10) as the Mavericks won by a 35-7 decision.
The Gators will return to the mat on Saturday, January 17 in Kearney, Neb., as they will participate in the UNK Duals at the Brown County Fairgrounds. SF State will face four more RMAC opponents in Adams State (9am CT), Chadron State (11am CT), New Mexico Highlands (2pm CT) and Colorado School of Mines (4pm CT). SF State will finally return home on Friday, January 23 at noon when they host Embry-Riddle (Ariz.).
