SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators will look to continue their three-game winning streak with two non-conference games this week. The Gators will host Holy Names this Tuesday, November 24 at 7pm at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. Then this Saturday, November 28, SF State will travel to the Haight District in San Francisco to face Academy of Art at 3pm at Kezar Pavilion.
The Gators, under the direction of head coach
Paul Trevor, are coming off a strong 2-0 showing at the Ron Logsdon Classic in Rohnert Park. SF State defeated Academy of Art 72-53 this past Friday, November 20 as
Warren Jackson had a team high 16 points.
Coley Apsay and
Floyd Wormley each chipped in 12 points for the victors, who outrebounded their opponents 33-20. The Gators also forced 21 turnovers by the Urban Knights including 11 by steals.
This past Saturday, the Gators rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Dixie State 79-75 behind
Nick Calcaterra's career high 22 points.
Jon McMurry added a career high 17 points off the bench for the victors, who improved to 3-0 with the win and 2-0 against Division II West Region opponents. Two of the Gators were named to the All-Tournament Team in Calcaterra and Jackson as they led SF State to two important early season in-region victories.
For the season, SF State is averaging 76.3 points per game while giving up 68 points per game. The Gators are out-rebounding their opponents 31.7 to 29.0 while forcing 15.3 turnovers per game. They are also averaging 14.7 assists and 9.0 steals per game. SF State is shooting 47% from the field and 32% from three-point land while connecting on 78% of its attempts from the charity stripe.
Calcaterra and Jackson are one two on the Gators in scoring with their respective 14.3 and 11.0 scoring averages. Wormley is third on the team at 9.0 points per game followed by Apsay at 8.3 and
Israel Hakim's 7.5 scoring averages. Wormley also leads the team with his 4.3 rebounding average and 81% shooting from the field while
Brantley Bynum has dished out a team leading 9 assists with just one turnover.
Andre Jones and Wormley are tied for the team lead each with 5 steals.
Besides Wormley's 81% shooting from the field, six Gators are shooting over 50% from the field in McMurry (72%), Hakim (60%), Bynum (58%),
Damien Rance (54%), Calcaterra (50%) and Jackson (50%). Calcaterra has made a team high 7 three's while McMurry has connected on a team best 57% from three-point land. SF State also has four players that have connected on at least 80% of their attempts from the charity stripe. Calcaterra is a perfect 6-for-6 while Wormley is 9-for-10 and Apsay is 5-for-6 while Jackson is 8-for-10 in their attempts from the line.
The Gators will return home tomorrow evening at 7pm when they host the Holy Names University Hawks. Holy Names is out of Oakland, Calif., and a member of the Pac West Conference. The Hawks are 1-3 dropping their last three games including this past Saturday's 85-74 loss at Humboldt State. Holy Names started the season on November 13 with an 88-80 win over Cal State L.A. at the Pac West-CCAA Challenge in Riverside, Calif.
For the season, the Hawks are averaging 78.5 points per game while giving up 82.5 points per game while being out-rebounded 38.8 to 29.3. They are shooting 45% from the field including 35% from three-point land while connecting on 72% of their attempts from the line.
Joshua Crum and Dante Robinson are leading the way for Holy Names with their respective 20.3 and 19.3 scoring averages. Crum also leads the team with his 23 assists and just 7 turnovers in their first four games. Robinson has connected on a team high 11 three's and shooting a team best 36.7% from three-point land and 83% from the free throw line. Zac Young leads the team with his 65% shooting from the field and 8.8 rebounding average.
After Tuesday's home game, the Gators will return to the court for a crosstown showdown with Academy of Art this Saturday, November 28 at 3pm at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The Urban Knights are 2-2 after dropping both of their games at the Ron Logsdon Classic in Rohnert Park over the weekend. They lost 72-53 to the Gators and 77-56 to Sonoma State.
Academy of Art is averaging 60.3 points per game while giving up 69 points per game. The Urban Knights are being out-rebounded 34 to 26.3 rebounds per game. Chris Salas leads the way with his 15.8 scoring and 5.0 rebounding averages. He is also shooting a team high 68% from three's, 54% from the field and 89% from the line. Jase Harrison is also averaging double digits at an 11.0 clip and Uchenna Okeneme has dished out a team high 11 assists. The Urban Knights will host No. 17 Chico State tomorrow evening at 7:30pm before taking on the Gators on Saturday afternoon.
After their two games this weekend, the Gators will begin CCAA action next Friday, December 4 against Chico State with a scheduled tip-off of 7:35pm as they host Purple Out 2 at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gator women will also host Chico State beginning at 5:30pm. This doubleheader will be broadcast live on Comcast Hometown Channel 104. The first 500 SF State students to come to the game will receive free Purple Out 2 T-shirts complimentary of the Athletic Department at SF State.
