SAN FRANCISCO-- The SF State Gators' men's basketball team will return to action this Saturday, December 12 as they travel to Arcata, Calif., for a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game against the Humboldt State Lumberjacks. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm PST at Lumberjack Arena on the campus of Humboldt State.
The Gators, under the guidance of sixth-year head coach
Paul Trevor, are 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA after losing both of their conference home games this past weekend 74-67 to No. 23 Chico State and 68-52 to Stanislaus State. This is the first time since 2010-11 that the SF State men's basketball program has started 5-2.
SF State started off last weekend with a 74-67 loss to No. 23 Chico State (6-1, 2-0 CCAA) this past Friday evening. This game was broadcast live on Comcast Hometown Network Channel 104 and was the Gators' Second Annual Purple Out game as over 1000 people packed The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.
The Gators were up by as much as 12 points against the nationally ranked Wildcats and led 67-66 with just over two minutes left when Chico State went on an 8-0 run to close out the game.
Coley Apsay tied his season high with 13 points off the bench for the Gators.
Andre Jones and
Nick Calcaterra each chipped in 9 points while
Warren Jackson added 8 points.
Floyd Wormley dished out a career high 7 assists for the Gators.
Saturday night, SF State lost 68-52 to Stanislaus State (3-3, 2-0 CCAA) as Wormley paced the Gators with 10 points with Apsay chipping in 9 points.
For the season, the Gators are averaging 72.1 points per game while giving up 71.1 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 31.9 to 29.3. SF State has a +3.3 turnover margin, forcing 14.9 turnovers per game.
Of those almost 15 turnovers per game, 9.0 are coming off of steals.
Wormley and Apsay lead the Gators with their 10.4 and 10.3 scoring averages. Wormley also leads the team with his 4.7 rebounding average, 22 assists, 65% shooting from the field and 5 blocked shots. Apsay has made a team leading 94% of his attempts from the charity stripe while
Damien Rance has made a team high 53% of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Nick Calcaterra leads the team with his 13 three's made while
Warren Jackson has a team leading 11 steals.
In the NCAA statistics report that was released today, Apsay is 16
th in the nation in free throw percentage. Apsay is second in the CCAA in free throw percentage and is tied for 9
th in steals while Wormley leads the conference with his 65% shooting from the field. Rance is tied for third in three's made and Jackson is 8
th in steals while
Jon McMurry is tenth in assist/turnover ratio (+2.7).
SF State's next opponent will be the Humboldt State Lumberjacks (5-1, 1-1 CCAA) this Saturday in Arcata. The Lumberjacks are coming off a 1-1 in which they lost 84-79 at Cal State San Marcos and defeated Cal State L.A. 74-69 at home.
Humboldt State is averaging 91.5 points per game while giving up 74.8 points per game and are out-rebounding their opponents 40.7 to 33.3 rebounds per game. The Lumberjacks are also shooting 49% from the field including 38% from three-point land. Rakim Brown leads the way for the 'Jacks with his 21.8 scoring and 10.7 rebounding average. He is also shooting a team high 59% from the field and 56% from three's. Thomas Witzel is shooting a team leading 91% from the line while Malik Morgan has a team high 33 assists and 10 steals.
The Gators and Lumberjacks split their season series last year with each team winning on their home court. SF State won on December 5, 2014, in San Francisco 67-58 behind
Nick Calcaterra's 18 points. Then on January 31 in Arcata, the Gators lost 86-71.
After this weekend, SF State will return to the court for the final time in the calendar year, 2015, as they host Northwest Nazarene. This will be the Gators' final non-conference game of the 2015-16 regular season with a scheduled tip-off of 5pm at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.
