Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO – The SF State volleyball team began its 2015 campaign against a pair of tough opponents on Friday on the road. Day one of the Seaside Invitational, hosted by Point Loma, saw the Gators fall 3-0 to Concordia and 3-1 to Regis in the first day of the tournament.
For the day, the Gators (0-2) received strong play from sophomores
Catherine Feathers and
Christine Johnson, as well as key contributions from senior outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark and new additions
Rachel Stoerkel and
Taylor Brownlee.
Feathers, the Gators sophomore setter, recorded her first career double-double in the nightcap of Friday's twin billing, finishing the four-set match against Regis (1-0) with 21 assists and 13 digs. Meanwhile, Johnson recorded a career-high with nine kills on 17 swings for an impressive .412 attack percentage against the Rangers.
"It was good to get out there and play," said head coach
Jill Muhe. "We got some solid information on what we need to work on moving forward."
To begin the day, the Gators drew the unenviable task of playing the early morning game. The Gators and Eagles (1-0) squared off at 8:30 a.m. at Point Loma's Golden Gymnasium. In the first match of the season the Gators fell 20-25, 18-25, and 23-25 to Concordia.
Clark led the way for the Gators attack, tallying 11 kills with three digs. Brownlee added five, with
Samantha Krakower and Stoerkel adding four and three kills respectively. Attack errors were the Gators Achilles heel in the match, with SF State recording 26 errors, 10 in the opening set and 12 in the finale.
Against Regis the Gators came out with purpose, taking the opening frame 25-20, before falling in the final three 21-25, 19-25, and 13-25. Attack errors once again proved to be the Gators undoing as they hit .133 compared to the Rangers .233.
Johnson and Brownlee led the Gators with nine kills each. Clark added eight, Stoerkel chipped in six as did freshman
Chantelle Williams, who looked strong her in collegiate debut. Four Gators recorded double digits in digs, led by Feathers and Brownlee who had 13 each. Clark and libero
Jessica Nicerio both tallied 11 apiece.
The Gators return to action tomorrow morning when they wrap up the two-day tournament. At 8:30 a.m. the Gators will battle No. 10 Colorado-Mesa. They will conclude the tournament at 1:00 p.m. taking on host Point Loma.
