SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators will be back on the road this weekend to end the month of January. The Gators will travel to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area for a pair of conference games. SF State will face Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday, January 29 in Carson. The Gators will then travel to Los Angeles on Saturday, January 30 to face Cal State L.A. Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 7:30pm PST.
The Gators are coming off a 1-1 weekend at home as they are now 10-7 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA. With their home split, SF State is tied for 7
th place with Stanislaus State in the CCAA (Cal State San Marcos is in eligible for the CCAA Basketball Championships). The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will receive a bid to the CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament. The first round will be on March 1 at the sites of the four highest seeds. The semi-final and finals will be on March 4-5 at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif.
On Friday night, the Gators lost 77-75 in overtime to Cal State East Bay when the Pioneers' Jalen Richard hit a jumper with 2.8 seconds left in the overtime. SF State had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed the back end of a two-shot free throw. Five players scored in double digits for the hosts led by
Jon McMurry's 17 points off the bench.
Treaven Duffy added 15 points,
Warren Jackson had 13 points with
Brantley Bynum and
Nick Calcaterra adding 11 points and 10 points respectively.
Then on Saturday evening, SF State defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 85-79 as the Gators shot 52.5% from the field including 46.2% from three-point land. Duffy paced the Gators with 16 points while Jackson added 15 points. McMurry chipped in 14 points for the hosts while
Floyd Wormley added 13 points.
Heading into their games at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A., the Gators are averaging 71.6 points per game while giving up 68.9 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 32.1 to 31.8, but are forcing 14.9 turnovers per game while recording 7.9 steals per game. SF State is shooting 45.5% from the field including 38% from three's while connecting on 72.4% of its attempts from the line.
Coley Apsay leads the team with his 11.1 points per game scoring average, 95.2% shooting from the line and 21 steals. He is tied with Calcaterra and McMurry each with a team high 24 three's made. McMurry has connected on a team high 40% of his attempts from beyond the arc while Wormley has made a team best 57% of his attempts from the field. Wormley also leads the team with his 50 assists, 18 blocked shots and 5.4 rebounding average.
In the recent NCAA Division II statistics report that was released this morning, Apsay is still second in the nation in free throw percentage while the Gators are 35
th in scoring defense and 43
rd in turnover margin. In the CCAA statistics report, Apsay and Wormley are in the top ten in four categories. Apsay is first in free throw percentage and tied for 8
th in steals while Wormley is tied for fifth in blocked shots and tied for 8
th in assist/turnover ratio. SF State is in the top half of the CCAA in seven categories: steals (second), turnover margin (third), free throw percentage (third), blocked shots (5
th) and sixth in assist/turnover ratio, scoring defense and assists.
The Gators will first face Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday at the Toro Dome. The Toros are 9-10 overall and 3-8 in the CCAA after going 0-2 on the road last weekend. Cal State Dominguez Hills is tied for 11
th with Cal State East Bay. They lost 74-51 to No. 17 UC San Diego in La Jolla on Friday evening. Then on Saturday, Cal State Dominguez Hills lost 72-71 at Cal State San Bernardino.
This is the first and only time that the Gators and Toros will meet this season. The Toros are averaging 73 points per game while giving up 75 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 35 to 34 rebounds per game. Cal State Dominguez Hills has five players are averaging double digits led by Ivan Dooley's 14.3 scoring average. Vincente Golson is next at 13.6 followed by Justin Sadler 13.4. Shaquille Hunter is fourth at 10.4 followed by Darius Butler at 10.2. Sadler is leading the team with his 7.7 rebounding average and his 58% shooting from the field. Dooley has connected on a team high 42 three's made and 77.6% of his attempts from the line. The Toros leading the all-time series 29-17, but the Gators have won five of the last six meetings including sweeping the season series last year (66-60 in San Francisco and 68-63 in Carson).
This is also the first and only time that the Gators will face Cal State L.A. this year. The Golden Eagles are averaging 61 points per game while giving up 71 points per game. Cal State L.A. is out-rebounding its opponents 34 to 33. Joshua Munzon leads the way for the Golden Eagles with his 13.9 scoring average and 38 steals while Duce Zaid is right behind him at 11.2 points per game. Zaid has made a team high 26 three's. The Golden Eagles are currently 3-15 overall and 2-9 in the CCAA, which places them in 13
th place in the league. They went 0-2 last weekend on the road losing 58-56 at Cal State San Bernardino and 79-55 at No. 17 UC San Diego. Cal State L.A. does lead the all-time series with the Gators 53-38 with the two teams splitting the eight last meetings. The Golden Eagles won both meetings last season 69-60 in San Francisco and 65-49 in Los Angeles.
After this weekend, the Gators will return home for three of next four games including two next weekend. SF State will host Humboldt State on Friday, February 5 at 7:30pm PST. This will be "Spirit Night" with the first 500 students in attendance for the CCAA basketball doubleheader with the Lumberjacks receiving a free t-shirt. The doubleheader will also be broadcast live on Comcast Hometown Network Channel 104. SF State will then host No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, February 6 also with a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off time.
