SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's volleyball team had an 8-5 advantage at the turn in the final set with the match tied 2-2. Unfortunately for the Gator faithful, the Toros went on a 12-7 run to take the set 17-15, winning 3-2 Friday evening at the Main Gym.
Even in defeat, Friday's contest was arguably the Gators best performance of the season. SF State (1-11/0-4 CCAA) received four tremendous performances, notably the play from setter
Linda Aerne who had 44 assists and 10 digs for her first career double-double.
Outside hitters
Haley Halpert and
Christine Johnson were a two man wrecking crew. They accounted for 36 of the Gators 51 kills. Halpert threw down a match-high 21 kills, while Johnson just missed out on a triple double, tallying 15 kills, nine service aces and eight digs.
Libero
Emily Johns recorded a career-high and match-high 21 digs to go along with four assists and a service ace.
Lauren Williams recorded seven kills, three digs, an ace and two solo blocks.
The Toros (5-8/2-3 CCAA) took the first two sets on the strength of Gator's miscues, SF State hit into 14 attack errors in the first two sets, while CSUDH hit .250 and .241 respectively.
Coming out of the break, the Gators evened up the match winning the middle sets, SF State did a bulk of their work from the service line. In the fourth set, the Gators held CSUDH to a match-low .051 attack percentage. In the fifth and final set, SF State jumped out early and as the two team switched sides the Gators had an 8-5 lead. But seven errors did the Gators in as Cal State Dominguez Hills held on for the win.
SF State returns to action tomorrow night when they host Cal State L.A. at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Gym at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
