Chico State Snaps No. 14/15 @SFState_MBB Win Streak at 11 With 75-61 Victory

Nick Calcaterra Was One of Three Gators to Score In Double Figures Tonight With 11 points.
Box Score CHICO--  The Chico State Wildcats held the visiting nationally ranked San Francisco State Gators to just 37% shooting from the field as they won 75-61 this afternoon at Art Acker Gymnasium in Chico.  The Gators' season opening winning streak was snapped at 11.  Coming into this afternoon, SFSU was one of nine teams in the nation in NCAA Division II that was undefeated. Nick Calcaterra and Warren Jackson each led the visitors with 11 points apiece while Coley Apsay chipped in 10 points.

Chico State (12-2, 5-1 CCAA) was led by Corey Silverstrom's game high 21 points and he was one of four Wildcats to score in double digits.  Robert Duncan added 15 points for the Wildcats while Jalen McFerren chipped in 13 and Justin Briggs added 10 points.

Nick Calcaterra's three off an assist from Coley Apsay gave the Gators a 5-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game.  The Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-5 leads in the next three minutes.  SFSU (11-1, 4-1 CCAA) tied the game at 9-9 as Israel Hakim made one of two free throws. 

The Wildcats outscored their guests 21-9 to take a 30-18 lead with just 90 seconds left in the first half.  Warren Jackson's jumper cut the deficit to 30-20, but Isaiah Ellis scored off an out of bounds play to give the hosts a 32-20 lead heading into the half. Chico State increased its lead to 45-27 early in the second half., but a Chiefy Ugbaja lay-up cut the Wildcat lead to 52-38 with 12:40 on the clock.  The hosts outscored their visitors 17-7 in the next six minutes to take a 69-45 lead on two made throws by Duncan at the 6:58 mark of the second half. In the final seven minutes, the Gators outscored Chico State 16-6 to cut the margin to 75-61 but it was a little too late as that was the final score of the game.

The Gators will continue their season long three-game road trip this Thursday, January 5 as they travel to Los Angeles for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State L.A.    

GAME NOTES
GATORS:  San Francisco State is now 11-1 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA.  The Gators fall into third place in the conference, just percentage points behind Chico State who is 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA.

COACH TREVOR'S QUOTES: "Coming back from the break, we were rusty offensively and our rotations were slow on the defensive end," said SFSU head coach Paul Trevor.  "Chico State outworked us this evening and my hat goes out to them.  We need to get back in the gym on Monday and respond from this game."

STREAKS SNAPPED AND CONTINUE:  The Gators had their 11-game winning streak snapped this afternoon while the Wildcats have now won the last eight meetings between the two teams.  The last Gator win over Chico State was on February 8, 2013, a 63-59 SFSU win in San Francisco.  The all-time series between the two teams is now tied at 101-101.

THREE IN DOUBLE FIGURES: SFSU had three players score in double digits led by Nick Calcaterra and Warren Jackson each with 11 points while Coley Apsay added 10 points. 
 
11 STEALS:  The Gators had 11 steals on the afternoon to bring their season total to 131 on the season.  Chiefy Ugbaja and Coley Apsay each had three while Nick Calcaterra had two.  Derrick Brown and AJ Kahlon each had one apiece.

TIED FOR THIRD:  With his four blocked shots this afternoon, AJ Kahlon now has 59 in his career at SFSU which places him tied for third on the all-time blocked shot list in Gatorland with Everett Johnson'84.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN:  The Gators will continue their season long three-game road trip this coming week as they face Cal State L.A. and Stanislaus State on Jan. 5 and 7.  Tip-off for both nights is set for 7:30pm.
