POMONA– For the fourth time under the direction of sixth-year head coach
Paul Trevor, the SF State Gators men's basketball team has received a berth in the CCAA Basketball Championships. The Gators are the sixth seed will face the third seed Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow evening at 7pm in the First Round at the Kellogg Arena on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.
The Gators come into tomorrow's First Round game with a 16-10 overall record and finished the conference season with a 10-10 record. They have won seven of their last ten games including five of their last seven. They're coming off a 1-1 weekend in which they lost 76-73 in overtime at then No. 19 UC San Diego in La Jolla on Friday evening. The Gators came back with a 76-70 win at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday evening to finish the regular season.
This is the fourth time in Coach Trevor's career that SF State has secured a winning and third time they have won 16 games during the season. During his stint at 19
th and Holloway, Coach Trevor is 82-79 while SF State is 1092-1096 all-time in men's basketball.
This past Friday night, the Gators trailed for the majority of the night until the 1:25 when
Warren Jackson scored two of his 15 points to give the visitors a 63-62 lead.
Treaven Duffy connected on two free throws as the Gator defense held the Tritons scoreless on their possession to increase SF State's lead to 65-62. Then with 16 seconds, Anthony Ballestero hit a 25-footer to tie the game at 65-65. The Gators had a chance to win the game but their shot fell short.
In the overtime, the Tritons built a 73-69 lead mid-way through the extra period but the Gators would not go away. Jackson made all four of his attempts from the charity stripe to cut the Triton deficit to 75-73 as he was fouled on two possessions. UC San Diego's Grant Jackson connected on one of his attempts from the line to give the Tritons a 76-73 lead with just 15 ticks on the clock. SF State had three chances to tie the game but all three fell short as the hosts took the 76-73 victory.
Floyd Wormley paced the Gators with a career high 21 points while Jackson added 15 points and Duffy chipped in 13 points. SF State held the Tritons to just 41% shooting and forced 19 turnovers including 8 by steals.
Then on Saturday night, the Gators secured the sixth seed for the upcoming CCAA Basketball Championships. Jackson led the way with 17 points while Duffy chipped in 13 points while Wormley added 10 points to lead SF State to a 76-70 win. SF State outrebounded the Coyotes 35-25 and also had 15 assists.
For the season, the Gators are averaging 71.1 points per game while giving up 68.4 points per game while being out-rebounded 34 to 32. They are now 16-3 when they score over 70 points in a game. SF State is also shooting 43.7% from the field while connecting on 34.9% of their attempts from beyond the arc and 72.3% from the line. The Gators are forcing 15.3 turnovers per game while recording 7.3 steals per game.
Jackson leads the Gators with his 11.0 scoring average followed by Wormley at 9.5 ppg,
Jon McMurry at 9.4 ppg and
Coley Apsay at 8.9 ppg. Wormley leads the team with his 70 assists, 29 blocked shots, 5.6 rebounding average and 52.7% shooting from the field. Duffy is has recorded a team high 29 steals and Apsay is shooting a team best 90.2% from the charity stripe. McMurry is shooting a team high 38% from three's and has connected on a team high 39 attempts.
Cal Poly Pomona, who is 25
th in the nation and 7
th in the region, is 21-6 overall and 14-6 in the CCAA after winning four of their last six games including three of their last four games. The Broncos won their only game last weekend a 64-54 win over Cal State San Marcos in their regular season home finale on Saturday. They are averaging 69.9 points per game while giving up 60 points per game and out-rebounded their opponents 34 to 32. Cal Poly Pomona is holding its opponents to just 38% shooting from the field and 32% from tree's while forcing 15.4 turnovers per game. They are shooting 46% from the field while dishing out 13.1 assists per game. Jordan Faison leads the way for the Broncos with his 17.3 scoring average, 7.7 rebounding average, 42 blocked shots and 58% shooting from the field. Barry Bell has dished out a team high 105 assists while recording a team leading 45 steals.
This is just the second time that the two teams have faced each other this season with the Broncos defeating SF State 55-40 in San Francisco on February 6. A three by
Brantley Bynum gave the Gators a 29-26 early in the second half, but the Broncos went on a 17-4 run to take a 43-33 lead in the next 13 minutes. A lay-up by Duffy cut the Gator deficit to 46-40 with just 2:31 to go, but the visitors went on a 9-0 run in the final two minutes to take a 55-40 victory. Bynum paced the Gators with 11 points as the Broncos held SF State to just 24% shooting from the field including 18% in the second half. Quentin Taylor paced Cal Poly Pomona with 14 points while Faison added 13 points and Bell chipped in 12 for the victors. SF State did force 18 turnovers by the Broncos while holding them to 37% shooting from the field.
The winner of Tuesday's game will face the winner of the UC San Diego-Sonoma State first round game this Friday, March 4 at 2:35pm in the semi-finals of the CCAA Basketball Championships at The Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif. The other semi-final game on Friday will be at 12:05pm between the winner of Chico State-Cal State L.A. and the winner of Humboldt State-Cal State Monterey Bay. The championship game will be at 5:05pm this Saurday, March 5.
