@SFSUwrestling's Ino and Furtado Place at 39th Annual California Collegiates

Tavis Ino Went 3-0 to Capture the 157 Title at the CCW

SAN FRANCISCO---   The SF State Gators hosted the 39th Annual California Collegiate Open this afternoon at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza and had two placers.  Tavis Ino captured the title at 157 while Dylan Furtado placed fourth at 149 to lead the way for the Gators.

Ino (17-17) started his day with a 7-2 decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Mike Herrera in the quarterfinals.  He advanced to the championship match with a 15-7 major decision over Merlin Miongolo (Boise State-unattached).  Ino captured the title with a 4-2 decision over Kyle Hansen (Cal Poly-unattached).

Furtado went 3-2 to capture fourth place at 149.  The redshirt junior started the day with a 12-2 major decision loss to Daxton Gordon (Cal Baptist-unattached).  He stayed alive with a win by fall at 1:03 over teammate Thomas Turcol in the fourth round of the consolation.  The Escalon native then won by a narrow 1-0 decision over Jerry DeLaRosa (SF State).  Furtado (12-17) advanced to the third place match by avenging his loss earlier in the day to Gordon with a win by fall (4:36) over the Lancer wrestler.  In the third place match, Furtado loss by an 8-1 decision to Oregon State's Jay Tovey. 

Romeo Medina (8-8) also went 3-2 at 157 while three Gators went 2-2 in their respective weight classes in Tyson Kuahine (165), Mike Marshall (174) and Calvin Nicholls (197).

Josh Lozano (157, Menlo) was the recipient of hte Dr. Northrop Award-Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Open.  Kyle Anderson (Cal State Bakersfield-una) received the Coach Haddad Award for the Most Falls in Quickest Time.

SF State will return to the mat this Thursday, February 11 in Atherton, Calif., for their regular season finale against Menlo College.  The dual is scheduled to start at 7pm at the Haynes-Prim Pavilion.  This will be the Gators' final action before they prepare for the 2015-16 NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championships on February 26-27 in Gunnison, Colo., at the Paul Wright Gymnasium on the campus of Western State Colorado.
