SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State softball team, currently riding an eight game winning streak, travels to Turlock this weekend to participate in the 15
th annual Tournament of Champions Presented by the City of Turlock and hosted by Stanislaus State. The Gators will play six games against teams from the GNAC in crucial regional matchups.
SF State enters this weekend's tournament with an overall record of 19-12, in the CCAA they are 16-8 this season and currently sitting in second in the conference standings. Last week the Gators were a perfect 8-0 with series sweeps over Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Marcos on the road. The eight game winning streak is the longest for the Gators since SF State won nine in a row from Feb. 12 – Feb. 20 in the 2010 season.
The Gators will begin the tournament playing a pair of games on Friday, starting with Western Oregon (13-14) at 10 a.m. They will then take on Montana State – Billings (9-19) at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday SF State will pay two, taking on Western Washington (16-16) at 9:00 a.m. and Central Washington (21-8) at 11:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude with the Gators playing a pair of late games on Sunday, first they play Saint Martins (25-6) at 12:30 p.m. and wrap up the tournament taking on Concordia (Ore.) at 4:30 p.m.
All-time the Gator are 49-39 in the Tournament of Champions. Their best finish came in 2004 when they went 6-0. In 2005 they were the Silver Bracket Champions going 5-1, their lone loss coming at the hands of Seattle University. Recently the Gators went 5-1 in 2014, going 5-0 before falling to Dominican 7-5 in the finale. Last season, the Gators went 1-5.
As a team, the Gators are hitting .276 and averaging 4.35 runs per game. Last weekend they hit .337 as a team, scoring 48 runs over eight games.
Jennifer Lewis was on fire at the plate for the Gators, she hit .433, collecting 13 hits while scoring six runs and driving in five.
In the circle the Gators boast a staff ERA of 2.78 which is 77
th in the nation. Their opponents are hitting just .229 against SF State. Last weekend, the Gators staff was lights out, posting a 2.58 ERA in eight games. Junior pitcher
Megan Clark earned CCAA Pitcher of the Week going 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA, holding opponents to a .180 average.
