KEARNEY, Neb..--- The San Francisco State Gators' went at the 2017 UNK Midwest Duals this afternoon in Kearney, Neb. The duo of
Matt Gamble and
Nathan Cervantez led the way for the Gators as each of the grapplers went a perfect 4-0 in the duals for SFSU.
GATORS AGAINST NO. 7 WOLVES
The Gators started off their morning with a hard fought 24-21 loss to No. 7 Northern State. SFSU took a 12-0 lead after the first two matches as
Matt Gamble and
Nathan Cervantez each won by forfeit at 125 and 133.
The Wolves took a 15-12 lead after the next three matches. CJ Voegeli won by fall at 6:05 over the Gators'
Joshua Villaflor at 141. Then at 149,
Joshua Weinberg lost by a 17-2 technical fall decisioln to the No. 2 Tyler Stenberg. No. 6 Blake Perryman won by a 12-1 major decision at 157 over the Gators'
Trevor Perez.
SFSU took an 18-15 lead as the Gators won at 165 and 174.
Tyson Kuahine won by an 8-4 decision over Ben Fichter and
Morris Wilner won by a 9-4 decision over Tanner Olson. Northern State retook the lead, 24-18, as they captured the matches at 184 and 197. David Murphy defeated the Gators'
Mitchell Owens by fall (1:36) and No. 11 Joe Gomez won by a slim 3-1 decision over SFSU's Johnathan Costa. The Gators cut the deficit to 24-21 in the final bout of the match as
Ricardo Jaramillo won by a 3-2 decision over Harrison Townsend at 285.
GATORS AGAINST OREDIGGERS
In their 22-15 win over the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines, the Gators took a 9-0 lead after the first two matches. Gamble gave the Gators aa 6-0 lead with a win by fall at 5:48 over Matthew Lavengood. Then at 133,
Nathan Cervantez (11-5) won by a 7-1 decision over Noah Au-Yeung.
Colorado School Mines tied the dual at 9-9 as the Orediggers won by a 7-1 decision by Justin Ray over Villaflor. Then at 149,
Dylan Furtado lost by fall (2:57) to No. 9 Jacob Gerkin.
SFSU retook the lead for good when
Trevor Perez won by a 12-6 decision over the Orediggers' Ethan Ruby at 157.
Tyson Kuahine captured a 21-11 major decision over Keenan Willits at 165.
Robert Gambrell cut the Gators' lead to 16-12 with a 10-3 decision over SFSU's Morris WIlner at 174. Benjamin Krantz made it 16-15 when he defeated SFSU's
Mitchell Owens by a 7-4 decision. The Gators won the final two bouts by decision to take the dual 22-15.
Johnathon Costa won by a 10-5 decision at 197 and
Ricardo Jaramillo won by a 6-3 decision over CSM's Jacob Feldman to make the final 22-15 Gators.
GATORS AGAINST MULES
SFSU started its match against Central Missouri taking a 9-0 lead.
Matt Gamble won by forfeit at 125 and
Nathan Cervantez won by an 8-6 sudden victory over the Mules' John Feeney. The Mules got on the board with a win by fall by Brad Irwin at 3:46 over the Gators'
Joshua Villaflor at 141.
The Gators took a 15-6 lead after
Dylan Furtado won by fall at 6:17 over Central Missouri's Zack Schridde at 149. Central Missouri cut the Gator lead to 15-12 as Stefon Fasset won by 7-3 decision and Jesse Risser won by an 8-4 decision over the Gators'
Trevor Perez and
Tyson Kuahine at 157 and 165. SFSU won the final four bouts either by fall or forfeit to take the 39-12 victory.
Jesse Lyga won by fall at 0:45 at 174,
Mitchell Owens won by forfeit at 184,
Johnathon Costa won by fall at 2:40 at 197 and
Ricardo Jaramillo won by fall at 0:26 at 285.
GATORS AGAINST VIKINGS
For their fourth straight match, the duo of
Matt Gamble (11-7) and
Nathan Cervantez gave the Gators an early lead. This time Gamble open up with a 21-1 technical fall decision at 125 and Cervantez won by a 3-1 sudden victory to give SFSU an 8-0 lead.
The No. 18 Vikings came right back and won the next matches at 141 and 149.
Joshua Villaflor lost by a 19-8 major decision to Augustana's Oscar Ramirez-Hernandez at 141. Then at 149, the Vikings' Bailey Neises won by a 7-5 decision over the Gators'
Dylan Furtado. They took a 10-8 lead as Colin Ayers defeated the Gators'
Trevor Perez at 157.
Tyson Kuahine lost a close match 3-1 in sudden victory at 165 to Bruce Lemon as the Vikings increased their lead to 13-8. The Gators took a 14-13 lead as
Jesse Lyga won by fall at 5:56 at 174 over Brent Havlik.
Then at 184, No 10 Aero Amo won by fall over the Gators'
Mitchell Owens to give Augustana a 19-14 lead. The Gators cut the deficit to 19-18 as
Johnathon Costa defeated Clayton Wahlstrom by a 12-3 major decision. Augustana won the match when No. 8 Michael Lowman defeated the Gators'
Ricardo Jaramillo by fall at 2:54 to give the Vikings the 25-18 victory.
SFSU (4-8, 1-0 RMAC) will return to the mat when they host No. 9 Cal Baptist and No. 19 Simon Fraser on Friday, January 27. The Gators will face the Lancers at 1pm and the Clan at 2:30pm.
