FORT WAYNE, Ind.--- In their final match at the 2017 NWCA National Duals, the San Francisco State Gators lost 27-16 to the No. 14 Tiffin University Dragons. Picking up victories for the Gators were
Matt Gamble (125),
Nathan Cervantez (133),
Tyson Kuahine (165) and
Ricardo Jaramillo (285). The trio of
Matt Gamble,
Nathan Cervantez and
Tyson Kuahine each finished 2-1 at the duals.
For the second consecutive match, the Gators (2-7) took a 6-0 lead after the first two bouts of the match. Gamble improved to 7-7 with a 11-5 decision over Tiffin's Hunter Langeloh. This was Gamble's fourth win in his last five matches at 125. Cervantez improved to 7-5 with a 6-3 decision victory over the Dragon's Cameron Gessner as the Gators took a 6-0 lead.
The Dragons (1-2) cut the deficit to 6-5 after No. 6 Trey Grine won by a 22-7 technical fall decision over SFSU's
Joshua Villaflor at 141. Tiffin took the lead for good with a 10-1 major decision by Michael Screptock over the Gators'
Dylan Furtado. In the most exciting bout of the match, the Dragons took a 12-6 lead as Samphanh Viengmany won by a 10-8 sudden victory decision over SFSU's
Trevor Perez.
Tyson Kuahine improved to 6-5 with a 17-6 major decision victory over the Dragon's Beau Minnick. This was Kuahine's fourth win in his last five matches at 165 for the Gators. Going into the last four bouts of the match, SFSU just trailed 12-10.
Tiffin took a 15-10 lead as Hayden Bronne won a close 5-3 decision over the Gators'
Morris Wilner at 174.
Mitchell Owens lost by fall (0:54) to the Dragons' Jared Chambers as Tiffin took a 21-10 lead. The Dragons won their next bout by fall too as Kevin Christman defeated
Johnathon Costa won by fall at 4:34.
SFSU's
Ricardo Jaramillo picked up his first win of the season as he won by fall at 1:53 over the Dragon's Caleb Fry to make the final Tiffin 27-16.
Some members of the Gators' wrestling team will return to the mat this Saturday, January 7 in Atherton, Calif., as they will participate in the Menlo Open Championships at the Haynes-Prim Pavilion on the campus of Menlo College. After Saturday's tournament, the Gators will travel to Kearney, Neb., to participate in the UNK Midwest Duals on Saturday, January 14 on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
